Since Redhat has pulled out of the regular distros and has their Enterprise stuff only to purchase and Fedora is really just a beta now...... Is it still best to go with a Redhat distro that is avail on some FTPs. Or should I go ahead and get something else? I need a distro that I can download and be the most user friendly since im inexperienced with Linux. :)

Fedora is fine - no buggier than Mandrake or SuSE. If that's the kind of distro you want, then use it. Or use Mandrake or SuSE - they're all more similar than different. But don't be put off by baseless rumors.

You can go ahead and still use Redhat 9.0 if you want.

Just install a good package manager. A package manager like Yum or Apt-get will give you a list of possible programs that a "repository" (usually a couple different FTP sites with a bunch of RPM packages) has that you can install. They automaticly download and configure your programs and also any dependances they need to operate correctly.

Then later you can actually use Yum or Apt (Yum is the standard for Fedora, I beleive) to fully upgrade your distro to Fedora. Think of Fedora as the future Redhat 10.0.

Otherwise there are plenty of other distros out there. You won't be missing out on anything by giving Mandrake a try, many people like that distro a lot. :)

Slackware worked out better for me than RedHat 9, even though I'm relatively new to linux.

Just wait, installing everything by hand gets old real quick.

Not true. You can download all the SRPMs for the Enterprise stuff, they just don't offer binary downloads.

I tend to agree. For all the complaints I have heard about Fedora, I have had not a single issue running Fedora.
For average Redhat 9.0 users you probably won't be able to tell much of a difference between the two.

Fedora has been pretty good for me. No buggier than any other distro. Most redhat 9.0 RPM still work for fedora so it is just like running redhat.
