It's scary how many people on a tech website have no idea what Netflix is. Youtube? What's that?

720p takes so much bandwidth that I can't even stream it properly. It needs to buffer for a while before playing.

What's scary is that, apparently, you don't know the math well enough to know that you could stream a Netflix movie every day for a month at 720p and not sniff the 250GB cap.

So, educate us. What's 12mbps for 30 days straight equal.

Way to fucking much or about 7k a month if you were to actually pay for what you used. You aren't paying for that kind of bandwidth/usage.

I applaud ComCast for getting rid of the constant abusers, they only degrade service for everyone.

According to Comcast I'm allowed 75% of my max bandwidth at a consistent rate, so try 9mbps for 30 days.

Oh, and btw...an Xbox streaming Netflix HD takes about 6mbps. So two Xbox's can max that 12mbps out pretty well.

Don't sell me a product and then complain when I fully utilize it to provide services for my family.

I have no clue exactly how much throughput it takes to stream a 60 minute movie. However, I am not a network engineer. However, it is possible to stream multiple pipes of video and data to several computers. Dont think linear. Plus someone could be outside and using your wireless. Then there is hosting video games or something like that. Also you could be streaming 24/7 No one watches just one movie. Are you Serious? My TV is hooked up to my computer. I also have a 20? daughter who is into computer graphics and animation and chat!

I am using DSL at about level 3 from my att provider. I dont recall what that level of throughput is.

You didn't pay for a constant load, so I'm going to shut you off if you do such abuse.

So you have a program that add up all your throughput?

I steam video from sites like Hulu, Crunchroll, Dramafever, and a few other places. I also watch it on my 40 inch HDTV. Some of shows I watch are Korean Historical Dramas. Some of them are fairly high quality video. My computer's integrated video can only hadle about a 720p stream rate anyway. I have been knows to watch up to 5 hours of video just on my one of two computers.

Yes, there are multiple programs that add it all up. Try DU Meter.

Also, 6Mbps is ~ 2.7GB/hr. 3 hrs of Netflix streaming is 8.1GB/day, or 243GB per month if you're streaming every single day. Of course, 6Mbps is totally unrealistic even for HD Netflix, it's more like 3-4Mbps, so halve that number and you're around 120GB-150GB/month, and that's if you steam EVERY single day. You could download ten 1080p 7GB movies legally and still not reach your 250GB limit with 90hrs of HD Netflix streaming monthly.

Fact is, it's extremely difficult to do....unless you're pirating.

How typical. You expect to SHARE your connection with your family??? Shens. You should need to buy 3 separate cable subscriptions each and every month. It's the only way to be fair.

Actually pirating uses less bandwidth than streaming video because pirated videos are rarely high quality. The top torrent result for the movie Watchmen is only 900mb. The video you'll find on something like netflix is much much larger. HD video on Netflix or Youtube is several times larger than that.

Game servers are another thing that take a lot of bandwidth. When I ran a dedicated server for Team Fortress Classic, 60KB/s (bytes, not bits) would allow about 12 clients, and the server was almost always full. Over a month, 60KB/s adds up to 148GB. That was 10 years ago. Modern games like TF2 require about 20KB/s for each client. If your kid likes playing games and he doesn't like being banned for saying racist stuff all the time, he could start his own game server without you knowing and you'd run over that 250GB limit in no time.

So I was googling this case up and I found this thread. I thought this was years old till I looked at the date that it's pretty recent. I was searching this up because this is happening to me right now.

I don't know what to do right now. I'm probably going to stop going on the internet for the rest of the month, but I've already gone over 2 months in a row.

THEY HAVE NOT CALLED ME YET. I've only checked today to realize that I've gone over two months in a row.

I'm glad Comcast is protecting the interests of their paying customers trying to use their service responsibly and as intended by booting the likes of cheneric and reallyscrued. WTF were you doing to possibly use that much bandwidth?

I know a few people that are purposely going over the caps to get out of their contract.

People seriously are crazy if they think it is "hard" to use 250GB. I use Steam on rare occasion, watch a few netflix movies and hulu shows and I get halfway there. Oh and I stream pandora and sometimes stream on demand /w DirecTV. Comcast is just trying to prevent people from cutting the TV cord and going streaming only.

I can only imagine how easy it is to use 250GB in todays age of information /w a family of four. I don't use BT, I don't pirate crap, I just am a normal user and I get halfway there just on my own.

Other parts of the world get far faster for far cheaper for their internet access. Companies just want more money when I guarantee they are already making big money even on the people using more data.

You can actually turn the quality setting down on netflix, which will greatly reduce its bandwidth usage. I don't know about you but HD arrested development episodes don't really add much of SD.

Why should people have to is the point. As we use more data, Comcast's revenue has actually increased.... but we use too much! Oh and they keep increasing speed to improve their "marketing" but then don't want people to use it.

High-Speed Internet revenue increased 8.8% during the quarter, reflecting rate adjustments, continued growth in our customer base, and an increasing number of customers taking higher speed services. Today, 23% of our residential High-Speed Internet customers take the higher speed tiers. Our High-Speed Internet service is capturing market share, and we continue to differentiate our products through service and speed enhancements.

Look don't get me wrong... I know there are abusers... but 250GB cap is fucking stupid. I pay for my internet I should at least be able to stream some damn movies with it.

If I could I would swap, the problem is companies like Comcast have monopolies which is a far larger issue than someone using 300GB.

You pay for a 250GB cap which will allow you to stream a bunch of movies...pay for the unlimited plan and quit complaining.

Damn cheap azzez here that want everything but don't want to pay for it....typical....

The cap wouldn't exist if there wasn't a monopoly in a majority of Comcast areas. My biggest issue is it is a low hard cap and no just a "fee" if you go over. I would be cool if they just charged a couple bucks every 5 GB over so if the rare situations when I do go over I could actually keep using the internet. Oh and they don't offer the business packages here, so again no choice.

Damn azzez who just give in to companies at the drop of a hat even though they already over pay for the shit they get.

If things are as you say, you stand to make millions in profits by starting your own broadband ISP.

you would applaud a compnay that is constantly decreasing the quality of servic they provide, while increasing profits, and while also complaining and whining that they are the ones getting screwed
