The most important finding by the Federal Appeals Court decision was the affirmation of Judge Jackson's finding that Microsoft conducting an illegal monopoly.

Although many commentators said that Microsoft won, I don't agree. The unanimous appeals court said that, although operating a monopoly was not in and of itself illegal, the way Microsoft exercised its monopoly power in the desktop operating system market was illegal. In that crucial part of the government's case, Microsoft lost big time.

It comes down to what the proper remedy or punishment should be imposed against Microsoft.

I've read that Microsoft has $60,000,000,000 in cash or cash equivalents accumulated from profits earned during the years of its illegal behaviour. (This figure I've recalled from memory, although I could be wrong.)

I say, go after the money. If Microsoft profitted from illegal behaviour, then it should be required to cough up its ill gotten gains.

So, the federal and state governments and all private businesses and individuals who were victimized by Microsoft's illegal monopoly should sue for money damages, treble (trible) damages in some cases.

I have got to agree with Pretender on this one, Microsoft's success is a testament to dorks striking back at society by succeeding in life :) (not only by becomming rich, but by developing a huge corporation from scratch).

Wah wah wah.

MS will get a slap on the wrist. IMHO it didn't hurt consumers and it helped mores buisnesses than it hurt. The $60billion figure is anti-MS propaganda, released by a group that is anti-MS.

See if it wasn't MS, it would be someone else. Laws passed over 100 years ago have no use in this day and age. We used to hang people right after they were convicted 100 years ago, should we still do that?

I have to agree with gbrux on this one. Microsoft has done many illegal things (like buying out competition and disseminating them) and continues to do so. I believe they have also violated our rights by forcing us to buy their operating system when we buy a new computer. Charging us for a bug fix (Windows 98, ME) is also pretty bad.

Also, what about the large file that keeps track of all our emails and places to visit and the supposed backdoors in Windows?

Why must we now register all our new Microsoft software? What about the ability to resell used software? Isn't that my right?

I'm a staunch Republican, but I really believe Microsoft should get ripped apart.

If you have issues with MS products...DONT USE THEM.

Its relatively simple to escape their monopoly, dont use their products.

Now here we go again with the If someone is successful then they must be evil so lets try and take their money attitude. That is so socialist it makes me want to live in the mountains with a bunch of guns in an old log cabin and waith for the FBI snipers to show up.

I just read an MSFT profile in which they have $30 Billion in "total cash". Maybe more elsewhere.

Think of the yearly interest from that at a paltry four percent...............$1,200,000,000 or 1.2 Billion.

The interest alone is more than many corporations take in yearly sales.

Compare the "total cash" sum to Sun Microsystems (SUNW-$2.23 Bil in cash), Intel (INTC-$10.1 Bil), Oracle (ORCL-$5.89 Bil), AOL-Time Warner (AOL-$1.27 Bil), AMD (AMD-$1.6 Bil) and Apple Computer (AAPL-$4.14 Bil); and it's more than all of those combined.

Microsoft is loaded.

How did Bill put it in the movie....... "Without software, your computers are just metal boxes with lights".

<< I have to agree with gbrux on this one. Microsoft has done many illegal things (like buying out competition and disseminating them) and continues to do so. >>

That isn't illegal. Businesses have been doing it for years. It was going on before MS got here, and it will be going on after/if MS leaves.

<< I believe they have also violated our rights by forcing us to buy their operating system when we buy a new computer. Charging us for a bug fix (Windows 98, ME) is also pretty bad. >>

Violating your rights? What did they do, hold a gun to your head and force you to buy a machine from that company? Gee I didn't have to buy their OS when I built my machine. Again I say this: If you think that two companies agreeing to contracts for the good of both companies is something Microsoft started (or that it is illegal), you are completely fooling yourself.

<< Also, what about the large file that keeps track of all our emails and places to visit and the supposed backdoors in Windows? >>

You mean your history file? Wow. Clear your history. You mean your sent items folder? Amazing. Delete everything from the sent items folder, empty the deleted items. Don't like cached files? Clear your cache, set its size to 0, refreshing every time you visit a page. Incredible. Don't like your history? Clear the history, set the number of days to zero. Astonishing. Need me to go on?

<< Why must we now register all our new Microsoft software? What about the ability to resell used software? Isn't that my right? >>

Even with their new policy, you are allowed to sell your software. Simply call the toll free number and they can help you with that. Or is there some...other...reason...for...your...disapproval...

<< I'm a staunch Republican, but I really believe Microsoft should get ripped apart. >>

Do you even know why? You haven't given one valid argument yet.

That pretty much sums up all i feel about the whole microsoft situtation.

On a little sidenote someone in my senior social studies class did his senior presentation on how much he hated microsoft. As his visual aide he mad a PowerPoint presentation on a machine running NT 4.0! Bwaah ha ha.
I pointed it out to him and he just kind of said "i know"
