GNX may be coming back?

Can you imagine sitting at a stop light and next to you pulls up a blacked out cammed V8 Buick? I'd never consider a Buick until now.

Loved the GNX. But I am not sure what a return will do to the brand's image. Who is the target market? I can't see today's young shoppers wanting one. And the old farts who remember the car are not going to want a cramped 2 door with balls to the walls acceleration. They can get that with Stang/Camaro/Challenger anyway.

But hey, why not. It will probably be a reskinned Camaro anyway. Hopefully they keep the V6 Turbo setup. And any colour you want as long as its black ;-)

The people that bought the Pontiac GTO and G8 and don't want a pony car.

I would say 'people that want a RWD performance car and are old enough to be nostalgic about 80's cars but not old enough to want to be seen in a Cadillac.'

GTO/G8 were compromise cars. 'I want an American RWD car with decent horsepower that's not a Mustang and these are my choices.'

I think the news is pretty cool, but I don't know if it'll sell. With the ATS/CTS seeming to comprise most of Caddy now (or at least those are the only new ones I seem to see advertised or on the road), it would seem that they've swapped places with Buick. In comparison to the 80's, at least...90's are probably best forgotten.

Buick's current offerings seem to appeal to an older crowd. And Shaq...I find those commercials funny because I thought the Lacrosse seemed kind of cramped. I don't know the technical details, but it basically seemed to be a Malibu with better seats and more electronics.

If they could position Buick to compete with the Japanese luxury nameplates with these cars, I think that would be a pretty good move.

Four doors? Looks like they want to compete with the Charger. I'd love to see the GNX come back. Wish it was a little more retro styled, though I understand this image isn't what the final product is going to look like.

Saw this article:

http://www.insideline.com/buick/grand-national-gnx-and-t-type-are-returning-to-buick.html

This could be an interesting car, especially with a 450hp V8 and weighing in the ballpark of a Mustang GT.

kind of cool, but why throw a V8 in it? isn't part of what was bad@ss about the GNX was that it was a boosted v6 and wasn't a V8? Something like ford's ecotec V6 making mid to upper 400's would be more appealing IMHO.

as i read it, woohoo, another GM car with an pushrod v8

My understanding is it will be a reskinned ATS with the new LT1...sounds awesome to me especially if the look is more "sleeper" than the ATS. For the love of god GM, lay off the chrome!!!

That pushrods is the height of passenger tech IMHO. I'd take it over some heavy euro tech anchor anyway.

woohoo, another tire with radial plies

😉

I think one of these would be purely epic. I'm young, born after the original GNX. I think one of these would make a great car, and I would like the turbo V6. I already drive and enjoy a Buick, might as well drive one with more power.

There really is nothing Grand National about this car.

Let's be honest, the original was FAST for the time, and capable of utter insanity for the time with modest mods. But it was an atrocious vehicle in terms of any quality outside of the beast drivetrain. That shouldn't take away from the GNX legend, but it's the honest truth. The steering wheel and handling, the seats, the .. well everything but the power, hah. What else would one expect from a mid-80s GM product?

The new one sounds like it will probably be a nice drivers car, much more refined, 4 doors, 8 cylinder motor NA, plush interior, yadda yadda yadda. At least with things like Vettes and Mustangs you see the heritage over the years. If this new thing wasn't called a GNX, would anyone honestly even loosely associate it with the old V6 boosted one? Aside from being a quick Buick?

Besides, the GNX was damn near the fastest thing on wheels for the time. These days this 4-door will just be an also ran, however nice it is, in a world stuffed full of SRT8, Mustang GT, 2SS, CTS-V, etc infinitum.
