First I will say that I really only use GNU/Linux and not windows, mainly for development purposes. I had an Audigy 2 ZS for a long number of years, but it recently died do to static discharge from my body, though my headphones into the card.

I wanted something better, tried out a moderately price Dac and was unimpressed with its sound quality compared to my onboard sound.

I want something better than my Audigy, but reasonably price. I only use headphones, rarely use speakers if ever.

It must work in Alsa. So please, if you have any recommendation by all means post them.

I have no idea what Alsa is, but I do know that Turtle Beach cards tend to have good linux support if you know where to find drivers. I have a Voyetra card and not only does it sound great, but my Suse LiveDVD picks it up every time and works without issue.
