GnR == Punk?

The bad boys of rock are back -- sober, older and wiser, but still hoping to turn the music world on its head.

Guns N' Roses ruled the 1980s with a mixture of punk and glam rock, while Stone Temple Pilots were one of the top grunge bands of the '90s. Both crumbled under an avalanche of alcohol and drug abuse, but now individual members have recovered and merged to bring back rebellious rock anthems as Velvet Revolver.

😕

I don't know about punk but it wasn't quite metal either. Regarding Velver Revolver, they do sound 50/50 like STP and GnR to me. STP when Scott is singing and GnR when Slash is soloing. Not a bad mix IMHO.

I think that's a fairly decent description.
Have you ever heard punk before?

I think VR is completely and totally, 100% mediocre.

yeah, i think a mixture of punk and glam rock is a perfect description for GnR. they had that raw simple energy mixed with the bad hair and the epic songs.

i dont think he has

Pennywise, NOFX, Rancid, sound nothin like G&R

Even if you went back to 80's punk bands like Bad Religion, Descendents, Black Flag or Misfits... hell no!

You just described most of the bands making music today. I never said that they were an outstanding band. 😛

I'm not talking new-school punk, I'm thinking the old stuff. Like Bad Religion's first album, Sex Pistols, etc.
So, I feel that the description of punk + glam rock fits.

Yes, please pop in Appetite for Destruction.

Bad religons first 3 albums
1982 - How Could Hell Be Any Worse? - Epitaph
1983 - Into the Unknown - Epitaph
1988 - Suffer - Epitaph

I own all 3 of these as well as ever other BR album, and i have concluded that you have never listened to them cause they sound nothin like G&R,

G&R is straight fusking hard rock like ACDC, its a mix of metal and rock if anything

Riiiight. I have a different opinion than you, so I must therefore be wrong. I guess I forgot Anubis was the ultimate arbiter of all musical genre description. Check the allmusic.com profile for influences, you'll see a few punk bands listed there.
I'm not saying it's a 50/50 mix or anything. You're saying you can see absolutely no punk influence in their music and attitude?
And come on, you can barely even compare How Could Hell Be Any Worse and Into the Unknown.

IMHGO influence on attitude is compleatly different then music

they act punk yes, but they play hard rock, i dont see punk in their music i see metal and rock

Don't forget punk is short for punk rock. It all stems from the same blues base as most all genres of rock. I guess if you can't hear it, you can't hear it. I can.
Let us also not forget this is CNN.com we're talking about here, not an actual music magazine, so I guess YMMV.

WTF propaganda.

GNR was not punk. They were classic LA metal/glam rock -- Motley Crue take 2 with an even grittier white trash edge.

STP wasn't grunge either, except as rip-offs (albeit good ones) of the real grunge bands from Seattle (AiC, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc.). They were alternative rock with a dark metal edge (some may say that's what grunge really is, but I think the made-up term "grunge" belongs only to bands that came from Seattle in the late 80s/early 90s).
