you mean gnome?

i've only used gnome, the consensus seems to be that gnome is a little slower, kde is a little more bloated. kde also seems to be more polished as of late. then you can always go sans-icons and use something like blackbox. loads up way faster and just 'feels' faster. it's like a motorcycle compared to a schwan truck. heh :p

btw you might get confused about all this, gnome and kde are "desktop environments". you have to also run a window manager to basically, well, manage your windows. the bar at the top of every window and all that is controlled by your window manager. you basically have to have a window manager (sawfish, blackbox, enlightenment, fvwm, the list goes on), but a desktop environment is optional. the DE controls your desktop icons, your little bar at the bottom, and all of that.

KDE.

Faster, looks nicer, and just generally more usable IMO.
Both are bloated when compared to WM's like Blackbox, but KDE isn't as obscenely bloated as some people say, and it comes with some really nifty tools and programs.

They are both very good.

If you are new to Linux I'd recommend starting with KDE. It will be a bit more familiar to you.

You can always install both and try them out and see which one suits you better (if you have the HD space).

Asking which desktop is better is like asking who the best athlete in a given sport is: there is no correct answer. Try them yourself and decide, thats one of the main points of open source software, we are not sheep using whatever some company tells us to use.

For the record, gnome.

I've got both KDE and GNOME installed but I use KDE most often.. really.. I started to use KDE more often because of the desktop themes option available in KDE which really isn't as easily done in GNOME. Even under KDE though, I used numerous programs that came with GNOME, gaim for example.. much better than KDE's kit IMHO.

I've used kaim/kinkatta (kinkatta is kaim after a name change) and still think gaim is better. Pan is also FAR better than KNode. I prefer KDE in general though. I'd have to say that the best bet is to install both. You can then use either one you want but much more importantly you get the apps from both.

ive said this before, but i like GNOME because you can install XIMIAN which is like an add/remove software program, email/calendar program, and more.

<< humn....still no definate one ?? >>

Of course not. Which one do you prefer is the real question. Use them both, try them out, figure out which one you prefer (if any), and DONT ASK STUPID QUESTIONS! Seriously, this is all personal taste. Much like Linux vs BSD. If you like one, use it, if you dont know yet, try them both.
