GNOME & KDE

Can someone explain to me (in 50 words or less), what Gnome & Kde are and why I should choose one over the other keeping in mined that I know about as close to zero as you can get about Linux ?

Thanks.

KDE and Gnome are GUI enviorments for linux. Both work well, and it's mostly a matter of preference. You should also realize there are other options, such as fluxbox, xfce, etc that are more lightweight.

It's all about personal preference here, I would get ubuntu live CD and Kubuntu live CD and try them both. I prefer gnome over KDE, but I prefer XFCE4 over gnome (really lightweight, and I don't use the GUI that often.

Thanks.

One additional question. I have already tried the Live CD version of Kbuntu & so far I have not been able to get modem to work at all, it did not automatically detect and show my floppy drive and the sound (which is on-board) is of very poor quality. If I would try to actually install the Kbuntu system to the hard drive, would I still have these same problems ?

possibly. Installing it also allows you to get the updates. as far as modem goes, if it's a winmodem, you most likely won't get it to work. Winmodems suck that way. As far as floppy goes, from a terminal window, type "Mount /mnt/floppy" and see if it works. If it does (may not put it on the desktop or anything like that) then you can access it from that location, /mnt/floppy.
