Gnome help, changed settings not applied on startup?

When I make changes in the Gnome configuation tool, they are not applied when I start up. Specifically I notice that my background picture is not applied, and my mouse speed and sensitivity settings are not applied. Upon opening the configuation tool everything is set properly in the different areas and hitting the Apply button in each one sets everything right. However, if I log out or reset the computer I have to go into the configuration and hit the Apply buttons again... What's going on here? I'm fairly new to Linux but am starting to get the hang of it, this is a fresh install of mandrake 8.2.

If there are apply and OK buttons hit them both before closing the dialog and restarting Gnome.

After applying the changes, does the console (get to it with ctrl-alt-f1/f2/etc) give you any error messages?

Also, is this a "pure" GNOME installation - meaning the packages came from the same source at the same time? I had a very similar problem with GNOME once that turned out to be a result of a config file living in two places - one from a distro's package that had been removed, and one that I had compiled and installed myself.

Hmm, no error messages in console. Gnome was installed as part of the Mandrake 8.2 install, there shouldn't be any other versions on the comp. Thanks for the replies! 🙂

Are you telling GNOME to save your settings when you log out? There's a checkbox for that on the logout dialog, but I think it's turned off by default.
