Very interesting development. With AMD raising prices with Ryzen 5000-series, this might make more sense. If you trust a Chinese mobo, that is.

I would think the mobo would be trustworthy to function. Spying should be minimal.

But for us folks in the "western" world who can buy AMD, Intel, etc at reasonable prices, it is nonsense.

Go into Asia and Russia though, the markup on new hardware is far worse. It makes a lot more sense over there. In the video he is talking about Ryzen 3900X and points out it easily beats this system. However, in a world where a 3900x costs $1000, this is a bit more practical.

As a technical achievement, this is amazing. They must have reverse engineered Intel's microcode, or at the very least reversed it enough to hack together working images. They also designed this board from scratch, recycling parts of boards sent to recycling. That means they lifted the components off, tested to verify function, and then dropped them back on to this board. They constantly have to iterate the board pcb for different parts, with a new bios image as the components change.

I have been watching this guy for a while now -

He does a good job of reviewing the x99 stuff. Philscomputerlab is another good one for X79&99 content. Techyescity too.

I am having fun with the x79 system a client gave me. Being able to throw in a 8/16 Xeon and run it at 3.5GHz for under $50, is my idea of a good value. I am not willing to do the Ali express hope and wait for many weeks thing. But ebay has a ton of retired server stuff at good prices.

I wouldn't buy that particular MB, but X99 is a good platform for virtualization, storage and other server type environments. I'm looking at either a used SuperMicro server or building my own since I can get 40 PCI lanes, ECC memory and 12+ cores per socket for a reasonable price.

For example:

SuperMicro 6028U

2 X Intel E5-2680 v3
192 GB DDR4 ECC
SM X10DRU-i+
12 bay SC829UAC chassis
2 x 1000W 80+ Platinum PSU
Rails

$1,200

Was hard to find anything close to that on the AMD side right now, even if looking at used TR40 parts. And while $1,200 might sound like a lot for an older system, the memory prices are a huge chunk of that along with PSU's and a chassis of the caliber.
