GM's Saturn Vue Probed After Wheels Collapse
DETROIT (Reuters) - The left rear wheel on two Saturn Vue sport utility vehicles collapsed during rollover tests, prompting U.S. safety regulators to open a defect investigation into the General Motors Corp. SUV, federal officials said on Tuesday.
The collapse of the wheels, caused by a broken suspension, occurred last month while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a "dynamic rollover" test on two- and four-wheel drive versions of the Vue. The suspensions failed during a sharp turn at 45 miles per hour (72 km per hour).

The federal agency said it had opened a "preliminary evaluation" of the SUV, a step that often precedes a recall.

"There's no plans to recall the vehicle at this time," GM spokesman Jim Schell said.

taken from Rueters, 7/26/2004:

This is actually what the industry has been refering to as a "genetic safety feature." Those whose genes are so flawed as to make them want to buy a Saturn VUE are automatically weeded out of the gene pool when the wheel collapses and the car flips. This is a natural extension of the genetic safety features that Detroit has been working on ever since the first Bronco. They stepped it up with the Bronco II, and the Blazer/Jimmy, the Ford really cranked it up with the Explorer, which lured millions of genetically flawed people and then systimatically killed them by either rolling over or blowing a tire and THEN rolling over. GM pushed the suburban hard because it could kill large numbers of gentically flawed people in one roll-over, aided by the impossibility of making sure that many people were wearing their seatbelts, and the large rear "gene ejection window" through which unbelted bodies could easy fly while the vehicle rolled. Obviously not satisfied with such excellent passive gene safety features, GM has apparently stepped up their efforts with a Ford-Explorer-like Active Gene Safety (ACS) feature on the VUE.

In other news, Scion has entered the previously Detroit-dominated field of gene safety by installing their special Ricer Gene Safety Panel (RGSP) roof in the new tC. The roof, made of glass, is designed to shatter magnificently when the car rolls (yes, it's low, but it's driven by ricers, it WILL be rolled), thereby slicing the heads off the occupants and removing them from the gene pool.
