GM's new 255HP 3.6 liter DOHC V6

Doubt it, the 3.5L was considered probably the biggest engine flop in GM's history. It cost a lot to produce and never made the numbers it was supposed to.

Sure you aren't thinking of the 3.4L DOHC? That thing was a pile of crap.

Yup.. positive. I own a 2000 Grand Am, and we have GM engineers on our message board who told me this. I'm just passing the word along.

At least the 3.4L DOHC made decent power! (220hp). My brother has a '96 Monte Carlo Z34 at 75k trouble-free so far. Well, trouble-free except for when a mouse crawled up the place where the AC condensation drips out and was chopped to bits by the fan. But that's another story.

An all-new V12 will power Cadillac vehicles in future model years. Providing more than 500 hp (370 kW), the direct-injection gasoline 7.5-L concept engine uses a flywheel alternator-starter as well as cam drives on the engine backside. "We put a lot of the technologies on it just to experiment," said Ned McClurg, Vice President of Engineering for GM Powertrain. "It's a concept engine, (so) it's not the way it will go to production. There will be some changes."

I used to love the Lumina Z34's and if I ever bought a GM, that'd be the one.. people either have no problems or lots of problems with them. (from what I have seen)

I've just done some research on the 3.4L. It was big, heavy, and expensive. It was only a tic faster than the 3.8L but it cost a hell of a lot more, used more gas, and was much more complex. Repairs for it are INSANE. 6 hours for a timing belt replacement. 4 hours for the alternator. Spark plugs are a bitch. Battery is impossible to get to. Ect.

There was a reason why GM ditched it for the 3.8 in '98.

I read about that in C&D. 🙂

IIRC it put out 750HP and somewhere between 5-600lb-ft of torque??

You hinting at the grand national??? The GN was a turbo'd 3800 series V6 if memory serves correct.

I'm not saying the 3.4L was a great motor, I'm just saying that the 3.5L is GM's biggest flop.

Isn't the current 3800 (series 2) based somewhat off of the old GN engine? And now it is being revised (series3) again? Just trying to clarify.

GM has been criticized for not having hybrid-electric cars on the market to counter Toyota?s Prius and Honda?s Insight and Civic hybrids. Stephens described GM?s approach of hybridizing the highest-consuming vehicles first as ?intellectually honest.? GM?s soon-to-debut 13,000 diesel-electric hybrid buses, for example, can save as much fuel as a half-million hybrid small cars.
buahahhah!

And, unfortunately, the pushrod ancient engines will remain, albeit upgraded, and will range from 2.5 to 3.9 liters.
"waaaa, gm is keeping the pushrod engine even though it makes decent figures with good mileage on crappy gas and is cheaper to produce"
