I'm thinking about getting a set
I understand you need a FCC license to run on GMRS.
Does everyone(friends and family )using a radio or could they run off my license?

ha, ******, I'd never get one of those except for the fact that I already have a HAM license. If I'm not mistaken, I think the GMRS fee is greater too. Don't quote me, but I believe there's a $50 family license

Where have you been. There was a 5 dollar price increase a year or 2 ago

It's 80 bucks for 5 years.

Most people never bother with the license. It'd be really hard to catch people using it, but I suppose it's possible. Few years back you couldn't buy HAM equipment without showing a license, GMRS comes built-in so they just sell it to whoever.

You still can't legally own signal boosters or amplifiers and a CB radio unless you have a license.

If you have an amplifier and a CB radio and no license you?re guilty according to the FCC rule book (I've been doing some over-night reading)

What I don't get with GMRS is enforcement. I can go buy a radio at wal-mart right now. The radio;s have the license forms but how to the FCC know. How can they really track me(Yes I know about trianglation but do you really think they can track 5 feet of my handheld unit when I'm transmitting short messages and moving around)

BTW wally world doesn't have the ones I want'. I'm looking at them 5 watt 14 mile radios.
I might just wait for the 17 mile ones.

Yes, you are required by law to get a license BUT my guess is that 99 out of 100 people do not. If you check out the Hot Deals forum (from time-to-time) you will see deeply discounted prices for these radios. Most if not all the people who respond the the posting have absolutely NO intention of legally using the radios they are about to purchase.
