GMRS Licenses

I just got a pair of those nifty Motorola FRS/GMRS radios and there is this whole section about how you need to purchase a license to use the GMRS service portion.

My question is does anyone actually GET one of these licenses? It directed me to the FCC website, but when I click on the obtain a license button it times out trying to get to the next page.

They are $75 for 5 years, but I'm just wondering if anyone has actually gone through the process of getting one?

thanks,

G

I was going to get some when we went on vacation this summer and saw the same thing on all the boxes. I went home and did some research and it seemed like almost nobody actually paid to get a licence. I ended up not getting them anyways though.

that's not so bad... in some countries *cough* like the UK and Switzerland *cough* you have to get a licence to watch TV !!!
yeah, go figure...!

Yes you have to get one. Depending on the level of amateur radio in your area, you might get yelled at by a GMRS or other local radio nut for not properly identifiying yourself at the start, every minute, and the end of every trasmission with your FCC ID.

Interesting, that's right around the 70cm amateur radio band... maybe get a ham radio license? Or just get the GMRS license for $75.

1-888-CALL-FCC to get the license
or form 605 here: www.fcc.gov/formpage.html

Now the kicker is that if you are talking to your friend, you cannot share the license. Direct family, not a problem. Your friend will have to buy their own license.

I use Motorola Talkabout sets. Not sure if they fit into this category but I never had anyone interfere in a conversation before.

If they did I would tell them to come pry it out of my cold dead hand.

Having said that, since I use it for tactical Comms in the bush it would probably freak anyone out who was actually listening on the channel.
