GMATs: worth it to take a kaplan course?

Spooner

recently looked into taking the GMATs in order to attempt to get an MBA next year. I've been researching Kaplan classroom courses and it seems that they are quite pricey (about $1349)

i've been told by a number of people that took the exam that it is not worth paying that money and to just buy a couple of books with practice exams and go that route as they are easier than SAT's and take much more logic than memorization.

Can I get ATOT's take on this? Suggestions? Links to books I should buy?

I did very well without taking a course, I just read thru a few books - Kaplan's, Princeton Reviews, and Kaplan GMAT 800 (very hard, i missed almost all the questions, but makes you think) - I got a 730

Depends... are you dedicated enough to do the studying on your own? Also, what school are you shooting for??

I just did it on my own and did fine. I used the Kaplan book, and gmatclub.com is a good reference.

yes, i could easily study on my own, but i feel that i would get more from the classes. i guess i'm not even sure what to expect on the gmat's

are they similar to the SAT's with math and verbal? what's the format?

i've taught some standardized tests prep classes (SATs, GMATs) and i really think they're a waste of time and money. students who improved were hard workers that would've done just as well studying on their own.

Kaplan 800 book worked for me. That and the practice tests available once you sign up from GMAC. Although I've always tested well, so it really comes down to how you think you'll do. Read the books, take the practice test... still not happy, take the course. I got a 720 and 750 on the practice tests and got a 730 on the actual test.

If you've got good basic math and logic skills and can read well, you can do great on the GMAT without much prep. I took it after about 2-3 hours of prep.. got 750. If you're a good test taker and you do some prep to remember your basic skills, you'll do fine.

on the same note: I'm going to be studying for the California bar on my own this summer. Most people are willing to pay literally thousands of dollars to take a bar prep course, but I really believe that if I'm going to pass it, it's going to be because I work hard and dedicate myself to it.

It won't be because I go to some class that makes me do it.

Study for the GMATs on your own.

i'm fine with math, but i will need a definite refresher as to the basic concepts as some things have slipped my mind.

i'm fairly comfortable with verbal as well.

I just ordered these books:

1 "GMAT 2006, Premier Program (Kaplan Gmat (Book & CD-Rom))"
Kaplan; Paperback; $24.57

1 "The Official Guide for GMAT Review (Official Guide for Gmat Review)"
Paperback; $22.17

I hate Kaplan with a passion because I took their course for the LSAT and did not improve my score. Did all the damn homework and everything.

I took a class offered locally by a well-known math tutor. The class cost me $300 and brought my math score up from a 450 to a 600. Kaplan isn't really worth my money IMO. I would look around and see if there are any classes offered locally from respected teachers or tutors. They will usually be cheaper and I garuntee they will be more helpful.

Must... Resist... Smart-ass comment... 🙂

I am taking the GMAT soon, and I agree with most everything said above. Also you want to download GMATPrep.

Take a practice test using GMATPrep before you start studying. It will give you a good idea of where you stand.
