Gmail's search capibility

Is it me or is Gmail's search features limited?
I tried to search for an email that contained a link to free fonts.
I searched for "font" but it didnt come no. However, a search for "fonts" w/ the "s" came back with a hit. I even tried using an asterik but that didnt work.
