So I kept getting data usage warnings texted to me by Verizon saying that I was close to our data limit. My brother and I share a 6gig business plan and he usually uses more data than me so I kept thinking it was him. It turns out it was me.

In a six day period Gmail used 4.03 gig of data for something called "Background". I've never had this happen before in the year and a half that I've owned my G4 and been using Gmail on it. How in the hell does an email program manage to burn through 4gig of data in just six days??? Has anyone else had this issue before when using Gmail?

It kind of sucks because we are at the beginning of the month and already over our 6gig limit so Verizon is charging us more for every gig we use.

Here is a pic I snapped with my wifes phone. WTH is background and why did it use so much data?

Not sure.

I just looked at my Gmail data usage on my Galaxy S9, and from May 14th - June 11th, it used just under 50 MB.

I have data saver turned on, and my power mode is set to "optimized". Outside of that, I haven't changed any other default setting.

Yeah once we found out it was me we quickly turned off Background data using the slider but by then the damage had already been done. I was also using the default settings for Gmail until this happened. I didn't even know about these options until a few days ago. I never had to turn on data saver before this incident but I have it on now.

I just thought it was really strange that an email program could use so much data so quickly and am curious why.

I'm not positive, but my educated guess on why it would use so much data would be due to it basically connecting to the server non-stop looking for email.
I can't remember what app I had that used to do that (it has been many years, probably around 2008 or so), but I found out like you did seeing that it was constantly fetching updates (maybe it was a weather app or similar).
