Gmail sync eating battery on Evo

I've been getting a full days use with 60%-80% charge remaining for the last 10 days or so until yesterday. I was at dinner and when I pulled my phone out of the case it was very warm. I played with it for a few minutes then put it away. About an hour later I checked it again and it was still very warm and the charge level had dropped to about 60% (it should have been about 80% or more). A while later I checked it again and it was still very warm and now the battery was at 40%. I finally get home about 40 minutes later and when I checked the phone was still warm and the charge level was now orange and about 20%.

It was at this time I noticed that the circular "sync" icon at the top of the display was on solid and when I thought back I think it had been on solid before but hadn't paid much attention to it. So, I look through the menu's and it looks like google "sync contacts" is hung up with a message that says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." If I disable sync for google contacts the phone doesn't get warm and the sync icon on the phone only pops on and off as needed, but if I re-enable sync for the contacts the sync icon locks on solid and the message about "Sync is experiencing problems ..." keeps popping up. I suspect that this issue is causing constant pinging and that's eating the battery and heating the phone up.

Anyone have an idea how to fix this? I've powered the phone on and off several times already with no help...

Are you in an area with bad reception? When the phone fights for RF, it kills the battery.

No, good reception -- like 5 bars!

As I said, there is an error message when I toggle sync on for the google contacts and the error message goes away when I turn sync off.

i'd go home and stick it on wifi, then try removing and re-adding my google account to sync everything from scratch.

Well the problem is now gone, but I had to do a "Factory data reset." I tired to delete my gmail account but the OS indicated that there were other applications using the data and that I had to do the full factory data reset. Well, I did the factory data reset and now the problem is gone...
