Gmail: Removing Multiple Contacts and stopping contacts from automatically adding

All,

Over the past couple of years, I have somehow managed to collect a ton of contacts from various people I don't know (mostly from Craigslist, gaming sites, etc.). After getting an Android Samsung Epic, I find that I have thousands of stupid contacts.

How can I easily remove them? I wouldn't mind just dumping all of them and starting my contacts fresh. Also, how the heck do I stop a contact from being added to my list just because this person and I have emailed a few times. It seems to automatically add them.

This is through Gmail.com, not Outlook, not the NK2 file you would see in Outlook. It's on the left side under chat. It says it's just chat, but when I look on my Droid, it puts them in as CONTACTS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In gmail, look on the left hand side. All the way at the top, under mail, it will say contacts. Click on that and delete away. As for stopping them from automatically being added, I'm not sure.

I have "My Contacts" which is what my Android syncs with.

I have an "Other Contacts" which is for other crap that is added automatically.

Mine just works like that automatically. I don't know what you did to screw it up.

I didn't screw up anything. My "Other Contacts" is what I am talking about. How the heck do I stop that from automatically picking up someone I emailed with?

Unfortunately you can't. Google says this is a feature, so you just have to live with it.

What does it matter? That doesn't sync to my phone at all.

This. I use Google Sync on a Blackberry. Btw, people that don't sync their contacts are fucking retarded. If I lost my phone I'd lose so many leads on hot pieces of ass, and we just can't have that.

Yeah the only time a contact syncs to my phone is if I manually add it to either my phone or to the "My Contacts" group.

Anything added by Gmail is in "Other Contacts" which doesn't sync to my phone. They can be nice to have since sometimes I may have to email a company or someone who I wouldn't normally have as a contact and it's nice to still have that info.

export your primary contact list, delete entire list, import your exported file back in. this will delete all the extra shit you picked up
