I have 400 or so contacts that I want to import into GMail. I exported from Outlook and everything worked well, but I want to import them into groups based on company. I added an extra column in my csv export from outlook and copied the company name column into it and then renamed the new column "Group Membership". But then when I tried to upload, there are no new groups. I also tried to check the "also add these to groups" option, but then all the imported names come into a single new group.

Anyone have an idea how I can do this?

When i export from my current contacts list in gmail, into outlook format, it takes the group and puts it under Categories... for example, my wife shows up as My Contacts;Family; Most Contacted in the csv, where as a friend came up as My Contacts;Friends
Then just to make sure it came up right, i added another friend to a custom group called Test, and she came up as My Contacts;Friends;Test

I then modified the outlook style csv to make a new person, only name, fake phone and under categories did i put anything. in cats i put Test, and the person came up in group Test only. For good measure to be sure that it worked right, i renamed it dddd then made the group Free. it loaded this person into a new group called Free and nothing else (since its all i had setup). So categories is the name of the groups you need to have setup. split multiples by a semi-colon and your good to go

hope that answers the question
