Can I somehow use this to make free phone calls from my iPhone?

Not yet... it's only been available for a matter of hours :p

I can't see any cell phone carrier allowing such a thing, so if it ever comes around it'll probably be through the jailbroken google app... unless google can figure out how to do it through the mobile browser.

Google Voice has been available for much longer than a matter of hours.
This isn't google voice, this is gmail voice.

And am I the only loser who doesn't get the pop-up?! Here, I was thinking that on occasion, I'm the only one home, and I don't want a cell phone & have no land line. I'm phoneless! Amish even! I figured that in an emergency, I could use this. But nope, no popup for DrPizza. :(

It may not be free in 2011: http://news.cnet.com/8301-30684_3-20014676-265.html

In a blog post announcing the feature, Google would only commit to offering free calls in the U.S. and Canada through the end of the year. Google's Craig Walker, product manager for real-time communications, said the company had no plans to raise rates beyond 2010, but it is still waiting to see if it will make enough margin on international calls to justify the free cost of U.S. and Canada calls. It will cost a little more to call mobile phones in countries outside the U.S., depending on the country.

Just an update. I got the invitation today. I haven't really tried it yet(no mic), but I could access my GoogleVoice message inbox.

It showed up for me today. Incoming call quality is pretty good, and outgoing not too bad. Outgoing is very dependent on your upload speed, slow and it makes you sound like a choppy robot.

no way to check your mic settings or calll quality in the little app, is fail. maybe i'm not seeing it or something but it seems like an obvious omission for a company that prizes ease of use.
what qos setting does this require tweaking for anyways. its standard voip packet so dd-wrt should handle it ok right?
seems i'm going to have to twiddle with my qos, incoming was clear, outgoing got chop cuz of the downloadz..

I, for one, welcome our semi-new Google overlords.

I'm also totally OK with having to look at an ad or collecting information for free stuff. If I'm so interesting they want to know about me---HOORAY!!! I'M POPULAR!

Let's hope Google figures a way to make money off the free calls so it's still free in 2011.

I thought they used ad-bots?

They're hoping the margin on the paid international calls covers the cost of the free Canada/US calls.

You could always run a sniffer during a call to see what protocol they're using. I'd put my money on SIP or H.323

Well see then....

They better find another way....This is Google....If they can make $$$ off search, E-mail & other free services....I'm sure they can do it with G-Voice....

Otherwise Skype will pick up the calling features.

OOMA, 1 time cost, done. I've had it for 2 years, it's only not had service for 2 days. Think I paid $250 for the box.
