Gmail labels driving me crazy

I've been using Gmail for ages and been quite happy with it... now suddenly it seems to go crazy

I had about 50 conversations labelled "chat". yesterday i wanted to look thru some of them so clicked on 'chat', and the system says no conversations so labeled ... I go to 'all mail' and there they all are... i go to settings, look under labels, and sure enough - it says 47 conversationa labeled chat.... i thought what the hell, maybe some glitch... so i tried to rename 'chat' to 'chitchat'... and it says that label name is INVALID??

anyone know what the heck is going on???

would people who do not understand email or labels (or internet... yes, Xylitol, that's you), refrain from responding with inanities?

you know you basically asked for it.

in any event, maybe it is a bug in gmail. why don't you wait it out, and if it doesn't get fixed, rename it to "chatter" instead of chitchat?

i still doubt that will fix the problem. you may just have to recategorize (label) them again and make sure the changes actually were reflected by checking the labels.
