Gmail IMAP

Is there any reason they use non standard mail ports?

IMAP on 993
SMTP on 587

I just think this makes their users have to go through more pain during setup. Is there a technical reason for doing this?

Thanks,

David

Jeez take it easy. I wasn't complaining, I was trying to learn something. I've never used IMAP, but when I went to set it up the default in thunderbird was port 143 for IMAP and something different than 587 for smtp ( i thought smtp was 25?). So thanks Nothinman, I didn't know there was a different protocol named message submission.
