Went to log into my gmail account this morning and received this message.

Is this new? I've never heard of it. Also, I really don't want to give out my cell phone #. Any way around it?

Was the message from Nigeria?

Yes it is real, someone(hacked by chinese) has gotten into your account and is sending out spam from it most likely.

Usually because you have a trojan/virus on your machine or you logged into your email from a machine that does.

Happened to me a few weeks ago. Someone got into my account and sent like 100 spam messages overnight.

My mom had some issues with some site wanting her phone number, wasn't Gmail though. Wasn't even a site where she had to log into, just looking for something (mapquest maybe?).
Anyway, several days later i was over there & there was an ask.com toolbar installed along with several other things installed (some weather program & something else). Mom never installed those thing but her grandkids had been on the computer recently, Facebook & such.

All scans came up empty & i un-installed everything without any problems.

Look for any unusual programs in add/remove list & run AV & spyware scans just to be sure.
