just read an article in Automotive news. gotta have a subscription. Basically said the GM is letting Holden do the engineering for another Pontiac model and a Chevrolet model RWD car that will be released later in the decade (~2007). Scary that they are letting Aussies do the engineering instead of stateside folks. Maybe they will be limited production models like the GTO?

Why does that scare you? GM is a multinational company spread out over the whole world. They build cars with Toyota and Suzuki and I heard they were going to start using a Honda engine.

GM North America plans new rwd family

By Rick Kranz
Automotive News / February 17, 2003

CHICAGO - GM North America will develop a family of rear-drive cars with Holden Motor Ltd. in Australia, says Mark Hogan, GM group vice president for advanced vehicle development.

Some of the cars will be assembled in the United States and marketed by Chevrolet and Pontiac and will debut around 2007.

"Holden will be responsible for engineering (the architecture), and we are providing the management team with respect to the North American applications," Hogan says. "I have a group of guys at Holden as we speak working on the next generation for North America."

In the meantime, Pontiac will sell the V-8-powered 2004 Pontiac GTO coupe, which is built in Australia and based on the current-generation rwd Holden Monaro. The GTO goes on sale in November.

Powerful, rear-drive cars are making a comeback in the United States. Dodge, for example, will sell the Magnum, equipped with a 5.7-liter V-8, starting in spring 2004.

In January, a GM spokesman said Chevrolet would add a rwd car later in the decade but declined to be specific. It currently sells the rwd Corvette.

GM is developing most of its vehicle architectures for global applications. For example, GM's new mid-sized Epsilon architecture is shared by the 2003 Saab 9-3, Opel Vectra, 2004 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, and the 2005 Pontiac Grand Am.

In GM parlance, an architecture includes common components, build sequence, range of dimensions and connecting points between subsystems.

Hogan says the new rwd architecture developed with Holden will be able to produce various models, as the current architecture does.

Excellent news really. The VE platform, which is being taked about, is going to come in about 3 different sizes. From what I have heard these cars will start arriving in 2006 as 2007 models. The bold bit is the most important bit :D

The other bit of good news for GM is taken from here.

The price of power -- the most exclusive ... and expensive ... HSV yet
By Joshua Dowling
The Sun-Herald
Monday February 17 2003

Holden is poised to build the Ferrari of Monaros -- with a price to match. After making its debut as a concept car at last year's Sydney Motor Show, the most expensive Holden ever, the HRT 427, is going into limited production.
At $215,000, the HRT 427 is more than twice the price of the most expensive Holden to date, the $96,500 GTS coupe.

Just 50 HRT 427s will be made, even though the company had 86 firm orders and up to 100 serious expressions of interest.

The decision to build fewer cars than customers mirrors Ferrari's marketing approach with its $2 million Enzo supercar, but with a difference. Ferrari's marketing mantra states that there should always be at least one person who misses out on one of its cars. Holden Special Vehicles is poised to disappoint at least 36 people who have paid deposits -- plus the 100 who reportedly had their chequebooks at the ready.

Significantly, the orders were placed before the car was confirmed for production and before a price was announced.

What's the attraction? The HRT 427 looks like a Monaro but has supercar strength under its skin, thanks to a massive 7.0-litre V8 and race-ready suspension and brakes. HRT stands for Holden Racing Team and 427 refers to the engine's capacity in cubic inches.

The car is part of a plan to move Holden's performance car division further upmarket to tackle Europe's thoroughbred brands.

The fast-car arm has been forced to build even more outrageous models since Holden's sporty models took on a more aggressive appearance five years ago.

The new Holden Commodore SS, for example, could be mistaken for a previous generation HSV model.

HSV managing director John Crennan told dealers at a conference last week that the HRT 427 was going into production later this year.

Each one will be hand built and individually numbered. HSV insists it will not increase capacity to meet demand, so maintaining exclusivity.

The first customers should receive their cars in time for Christmas, but they will get more than a car included in the price.

HSV is expected to offer racetrack driving days with its team of V8 Supercar race aces, and the company will appoint someone to deal with each customer on a one-on-one basis. Mr Crennan said customers in this price category want "personal attention".

"This is the biggest and most complex project we will have undertaken," he said.

"We are doing it as it is a wonderful advertisement for HSV being a world leader in high-performance specialty cars."

Expected to have 400+kw (520+hp) on the road version, and plenty more power in the race version :Q :D  . Will probably never been seen in NA, but thats GM for you

They had a picture and a little write up in Road and Track or Car and Driver this can't remember it was nice. :)
