The system is to become available on more models by the end of the decade ? initially other cars on the Epsilon platform, including the next Saab 9-3, Cadillac BLS and Saturn Aura. Whether it will be launched in the U.S. will depend on whether administrators deem it safe ? product liability laws are different in America.

Yeah I'd say that's a minor part of it. . .

"Hey look Homer's got one of them robot cars!"
*crash*
"One of them American robot cars.

I would love to see how this works. I remember seeing a special on similar technology some years ago (20/20 maybe?). That would be pretty unnerving to sit in the car, drinking a cup of coffee while reading the paper on the way to work in the morning.

For sure, especially with version 1.0 of the road going version. There's enough problems with regular software for your computer upon first release let alone your car that drives you at 60mph.

I'm going to wait until V2.1 at least.

Edit: brings up the old dilema of who is to blame if it screws up and kills someone. The original programmer? the tester? The project manager? The user using the vehicle?

That doesn't surprise me. The system probably uses lasers to track lane lines or the edge of the road. A crappy road that needs repaved might cause problems with the software.

Yep, they run it on Windows ME. It's totally safe, lets go for a ride.

GMs stab at getting good press. Notice they said said "by the end of the decade". I don't think GM can deliver. They put out ads flaunting their "hybrid" technology but have not delivered a viable product.

It will be a long time before any carmaker can afford the liability of these in the US. The technology will need to get much further advanced and failsafe than it is now.

GM's had cruise control on vehicles for some time now that sense when vehicles are getting too close to the front or rear of the vehicle and will augment speed accordingly. Just the next step in cruise control technology. :)

To those knocking it, thinking that driving won't be fun anymore, do you honestly think you won't have any control over the car? Use yer brains. That won't ever happen. It'll be a feature that you can turn on and off.

Great...take all the fun out of owning a car.

No joke. Why not just ride the damn bus.

You always have the choice of driving yourself. But if you're coming home late from the bar, I don't recall busses being there at 2a.m. waiting for you, nor will they take you directly to your destination.

I don't know about you but I'd rather have a sophisticated, tested car that is hopefully prone to crashing than a drunk driver on the wrong side of the road.

I'd even take that over a woman eating a bigman talking on her cell phone putting on her make up etc. as well

They have plenty of viable products for hybrid technology. Ethanol vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, blah blah blah. However, the fuel delivery infrastructure makes mass product of these vehicles prohibitive.

Why don't you ask the National Park system how they're doing with the Hybrid busses GM has supplied them, from what i've heard they been saving from 25% to 50% on fuel.
