there is one built. I see it around my house once a month or so. It's silver and has some bad camouflage over the front and rear, but you cant miss it. Its REALLY wide.

Do you live next to one of GM's massive property's where they design, build and test-drive concepts?

It's either an automatic with user-selectable gears, ala Audi's Tiptronic or BMW's Steptronic, or it's a clutchless manual with paddle shifters, ala BMW's SMG II transmission on the new M3 or Maserati's cambiocorsa transmission. Heck, even Toyota offers a clutchless manual on their MR2. Given the nature of this car, it's a clutchless manual. If you want to know more about how a clutchless manual tranny works search the car magazine sites for reviews of those cars. Not sure if www.howstuffworks.com has a description yet.

its a solenoid engaged manual. it shifts sequentially, so first to second, second to third, no first to third. still has a clutch and all, but because the machine shifts when you tell it to, it can shift in 1/1000 of a second. the best manual drivers require 1/10th of a second or more, so semi-autos dominate F1 (williams's semi-auto has a fully auto mode this year). not the same as these sport shift modes you find on most cars, which are computer controlled autos that allow you to specify a gear given you're within a set of parameters.

Yeah, where are you seeing this? Your a ways from Milford proving grounds and the tech center in Warren. Of course most of the Cadillac Tech center has been moved to Flint from Clark Street. I've got a buddy who is a supervisor for the mechanics in the prototype garage in Flint.

so with these semi-auto's - is the torque convertor used on auto transmissions gone?

Milford is <15 min away from me. I go to school in Flint(Kettering) and I am originally from Warren. :) For anyone who knows the area. I have seen it twice on Andersonville Road between White Lake and Dixie Hwy. Anyone in michigan can back me up that many concepts are on the road right now. The Chrysler Pacifica is out here, as is the Envoy XL and the 2003 Navigator. Manufacturers plates are prevalent here.

The MR2 takes almost a full second to switch gears.
