the radio in my wifes 2007 impala is dying and it needs to be replaced.
I have found several oem replacements on ebay and at local junkyards for ~$80.
However, I found out that the VIN has to be programmed into the new one or it will not work... (anti theft protection?)

The dealer garage wants to charge $150 for this... is there any place else where I can have this done for cheaper?

wow. I swapped the radio out in my wifes caviler that had anti theft.
My advice, find another dealer to do it. My dealer did it for free, took about 3 minutes with the tech 2 device.

Ok, so my 2007 impala (LT) which is a U1C (am/fm/cd) option, which has ceased functioning. I went to a local auto wrecker and was able to pick up a radio from a 2007 impala (LT), but it a US8 (am/fm/cd/mp3)... I wanted to make sure that the new radio will work in my vehicle.

shocking. like i needed another reason to never buy an american car

"Foreign" ones do it also. Removing my stock Radio disables the HVAC. Granted all it takes is a cable bypass to fix. Most of the new cars use CAN bus and the radio is often in the chain or is even a "hub" for the front 1/2 of the car. In my case you need to have a custom cable to connect the can bus to bypass the missing radio. This is ignoring the $200 of custom parts to give me a standard "DIN" slot. DIN seems to be dying. That and it seems like all aftermarket radios of late are more interested in the light show then being a radio.

CAN bus vehicles are nearly universal. Not buying "American" won't avoid it. It started overseas, iirc. My 2008 Jeep is fully CAN bus. The radio will not even turn on out of the car. Needs the network controller to talk to it.

My 04 F150 has CAN bus and nothing is disabled without the radio. Who cares if it doesn't power on outside the car if you're replacing it?

aftermarket accomplishes nothing since I still need the factory stereo for the anti-theft, remote start, and several other features of the vehicle.

Metra electronics makes adapters that will work but they're pricy, the one for my '05 Malibu is $175, ouch..

Recently had this issue with another truck (GM) and my local dealer said $50 to reprogram to the VIN... Ended up going aftermarket with the proper wiring harness/adapter module, everything works fine...

Suggest you do find another dealer or up to date shops can also do this and might be cheaper if you must stay with OEM...

I do. Can't test it without a car or a simulator. Plus, there are different bus speed radios, high and low, and they aren't interchangeable.
