Meet the Buick Envision, an SUV made in Shandong, China. I'm surprised they would choose a more expensive Buick for a car from China. I was expecting cheaper compact cars. But I guess they are pretty confidant that these cars will meet the standards in the US for a luxury car? I wonder how much profit it will be for each car for them? I imagine it would be a lot?

The nation’s No. 1 auto maker by sales early next year plans to start selling the Buick Envision, a midsize sport-utility vehicle made in Shandong province, according to people familiar with the plan. The move would add a third SUV to Buick’s U.S. lineup at a time when such crossovers are among the best selling vehicles in the market.

Initially, the company expects to import a modest number—between 30,000 and 40,000—a year. But it signals the beginning of a strategic production shift for the Detroit auto giant and a bold experiment that will be closely followed by other auto companies that have said they would eventually consider such a move.

I'm curious to see how that turns out.

“There’s too much quality risk in China to produce there,” Takashi Yamamoto, executive vice president of Lexus International and an engineer who’s worked at Toyota for 33 years. The company also still has to improve the brand’s awareness and standing among consumers. “When that difficulty is gone, maybe local production is likely to be launched in China, maybe several decades later,” he said.

Buick is a high end car in China so its safe to say GM has worked any bugs out of it to keep its image up there.

I still think it could hurt, at least for a short while. "GM sells Chinese cars..." will be what people say. Then its "All GM cars are made in china..." even when its still a small portion but enough to hurt.

Actually it makes sense as China is Buick's largest market. The reason the Buick brand was not canned was all because of China. Chinese love the crap out of Buicks.

China charges us huge tariffs to sell US made cars there, but we are just going to let them sell their junk here?

Whats more confusing to me than buying american cars built in china is the fact that they think they can sell 40,000 of these a year here? Buicks are already a joke, and that envision looks like every other Buick made since their fake attempt to be cool -- completely embarrassing.

40k lol

Too many shills and traitorous douchebags in the government.

The REAL reason why they're making it in China is so that it's cheaper to sell them to Chinese. The Chinese revere things that are made in America, or American brands.

so it makes sense to produce vehicles in china to avoid these tariffs. In fact GM was forced to find new markets for their cars as sales were declining in north america due to competition from the japanese.

They charge them on imports, Hence why GM has a plant there.

I'll bet more people will be pissed about the bail out and GM importing from China than the fact they are from China...

People have no problem buying cars from Japan or Korea.

Japanese vehicles are known for their quality...China, not so much. But yeah, you're probably right.

There's the high-end Volvo that's being made in China too.

Yeah, Volvo builds in China now & my Jeep Renegade was made in Italy. Kia is making cars in Georgia (US) & Hyundai is making cars in Alabama. Everything is multi-national now :p

I'm not so sure that it's a good idea to advertise that people can't recognize your vehicles.

The Chevy Aveo / Pontiac G3 is a Korean car, so this isn't a new thing.

The most desired brand over there I heard, so I suspect you are right.
