Why do most people prefer Matte screens to glossy ones? It seems to me whenever I see a side by side shot of an LCD both the same size and both say TN panels or IPS whatever and they both have the same resolution the glossy one looks way way better color wise. The colors are much more alive and vibrant and the matte one is much more dull. So aside from say the reflection glossy screens give off why would do most people still choose matte? Just curious btw..

there are different kinds of glossy though. some are just a simple coating thats not even noticeable once the monitor is on. others you could do your make up in if you have any light source behind you. my monitor is odd in that the screen is not glossy but the bezel is. the inside edges reflect whatever is on the screen and sometimes irritates the crap out of me. I personally dont want anything reflective or glossy on a monitor.

glossy generally has better, vibrant colors, but I can't stand any kind of reflections on the screen.

I have a PSP and after staring at the screen for a couple hours with reflections in it (light sources, bright reflections from random stuff, etc), not only did I have a headache, but I felt like my eyes were literally screwed up for a while afterwards.

Actually, you can get reflections in matte as well, but it's usually no where near as bad as it would be on a glossy screen.

No big deal about small reflections... I mean was there not a time when we all used glass CRTs?

Slightly off-topic: I thought it's quite amusing that Apple is now charging $50 for "anti-glare" now that its default screen is 'glossy'. It used to charge $50 for "Gloss-finish" when it was first offered as an option.

Ha that sounds like typical Apple marketing. I ended up getting the Dell S2409W. I've been using it for a few hours now. I must say I am impressed. I thought I wouldn't like a matte screen, I've always preferred glossy, like my other 22 inch lcd the LG L227. I had them hooked up side by side. And I like the Dell better I think :) The colors are a bit more vibrant on the LG, but not much. But I think the text is sharper on the Dell. I like the stand on the DELL much better its seems like the Dell is of better build quality.
The only thing that concerns me is the resolution. Alot of people I spole with said I should have gotten the 1920x1200 as opposed to 1920x1080. You said you've had both, is their a bigger difference? Overall I very pleased with it so far...

most choose matte over glossy because matte LCDs dominate the glossy LCDs in market saturation

I've had two glossy screens and one matte. I really don't notice the reflections and the monitors have been in a room with a large window so at times its fairly bright. Like a lot of things you say "oh, I can't stand any reflections" but after a short adjustment period you don't even notice them. And the color on the glossy is more vibrant and blacks darker. Its kind of like when you first wear glasses. At first you notice them on your face and the frame in you field of vision, but after a few weeks you forget they're there.

Then why do most professional users recommend matte over glossy? It can't be just because of the reflection issue...

My headache and cross-eyed vision begs to differ. XP

But you could also make the same argument about the "vibrant colors" glossy screens typically offer. After a few weeks of using a matte screen, you would never notice that the matte screen is dull.

Six of one, half dozen of another. I'd rather get used to a bit of minor reflection than crappier color and weaker blacks.

I hate reflections. I made sure my LCD was matte as I have windows to the side and rear of me.

Does this only apply to their desktop monitors or does it apply to their macbooks as well?

In response to the OP, I hate reflections; it's eye straining and awfully annoying, especially in lighted areas.

my 24" doesn't face the window. I face the window and the sunlight only hits the back of the monitor. In this case, glossy vs matte is moot point unless someone turns on a bright light behind me. But overall I prefer matte because glossy screens are restricted in placement options if you hate glare. For laptop screens I'd say matte is the way to go because you're much more lightly to be using a laptop in a public environment with multiple light sources or just hight ambient light in general. on long road trips I find it hard to use a lappie with a glossy screen in the day time because of the insane amount of glare. Too bad most lappies seem to ship with gloss these days...
