I'm sitting here, doing some last minute summer school nonsense, and I'm listening to the soundtrack of Glory (which is friggen *awesome*)...and I swear when you mention Glory, as a great war movie, quite a few people don't know about it. If you ask most people today, the first thing that seems to come out is Saving Private Ryan. SPR was a *damn* good movie, and Tom Hanks os the best actor there is in my opinion, but there's something about Glory that just makes it so good. Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington....remember when he takes those lashings and just *stares* at Broderick??

"If this man should fall, who will take the flag? I will!"

Damn that movie rocks :D

yea it was pretty good, i saw it on upn. you're right though, up until i saw it on tv, i'd never heard of it. then again, you'd be surprised at how many people haven't seen the godfather. that is my all time favorite movie.

Yeah, I'd say Glory one of the best war movies ever. Right up there with Platoon in my book. (Amazes me how many people haven't seen that either)

I was gonna say that in my original post, that the only other war movie right up there would be FMJ...but, in a different way, you know??

Platoon, Glory, Saving Private Ryan -- all frickin' great movies. I think SPR is the best of 'em all, personally, but I find it hard to argue against those others, either.

While Denzel, Morgan, and Matthew were all great in Glory, it was Andre Braugher's performance that really, really impressed me.

I got the special edition DVD. :) I think I saw it in 8th or 9th grade, a couple of years after it came out, we watched it in class and discussed it I think.

Any movie that starts out with a head being blown off by a cannon is bound to stick in your mind. :)

I want to get my beard waxed like Broderick's in that movie, I just don't know how to do it.

Gettysburg (that how you spell it?) also ruled as a war movie. That, and Glory are in my opinion the best civil war movies out there. That, and SPR are the best. Full metal jacket is cool too.

Gettysburg was a great movie, but The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara (book the movie was based on) was even better. :)

Hmmm..., I wonder if we were in the same class? I saw it in 8th grade also. IMO, thumbs up also. However, I liked Platoon better, and watching SPR at the theatres etched itself into my head as the most chillin :Q war movie I've ever seen. Sometimes I feel guilty when I plop in the SPR dvd, turn up the 5.1 DD, and sit back and watch; almost feel like I shouldn't be watching it again. Another good war movie, though not as violent and action-filled, was Schindler's List. When I think back to other movies made about the Civil War, like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne movies, Glory was a much better representation of that time in history. Although I liked Braveheart, I thought the Patriot was a ripoff of something along the lines of Glory/Last Of The Mohicans. Just another movie showing off the "special" effects studios could produce.

hahah...that would certainly be funny :D

I dunno about you, but I don't really consider Braveheart (best movie...ever) a "war movie". And I was just thinking about watching the Patriot again today, but again, would you classify that as a war movie?

Older war movies are much better than the new "romance novel war movies" (a la Pearl Harbor) although the fight scenes today are much more real (eg. SPR has two outstanding fight sequences filled with 1.5hours of boredom and pearl harbor has 45min of fight surrounded by 2 hours of boredom).

For a long non-stop, non-romance war movie check out A Bridge Too Far or Battle of the Bulge or The Longest Day.

Glory was great in my book too - I especially love when he lets the horse go on the beach (sad).
