The American Geophysical Union is the largest collection of geophysical scientists on the planet. It's membership is international, despite its name. It has issued a position paper on human impact on global climate change. Link.. The position paper is only two pages long. I've extracted some of the parts I thought were interesting. Catch that third paragraph about the mid-continent effects of global warming. That should take care of some pesky Republicans.

QUOTED MATERIAL FOLLOWS:

Human activities are increasingly altering the Earth's climate. These effects add to natural influences that have been present over Earth's history. Scientific evidence strongly indicates that natural influences cannot explain the rapid increase in global near-surface temperatures observed during the second half of the 20th century.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have increased since the mid-1700s through fossil fuel burning and changes in land use, with more than 80% of this increase occurring since 1900. . . . . It is virtually certain that increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases will cause global surface climate to be warmer.

In contrast, scientists are confident in other predictions. Mid-continent warming will be greater than over the oceans, and there will be greater warming at higher latitudes. Some polar and glacial ice will melt, and the oceans will warm; both effects will contribute to higher sea levels. The hydrologic cycle will change and intensify, leading to changes in water supply as well as flood and drought patterns.

Yet, model projections of future global warming vary, . . . . Even so, the impacts of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations would remain.

The unprecedented increases in greenhouse gas concentrations, together with other human influences on climate over the past century and those anticipated for the future, constitute a real basis for concern.

God I hope so.. I idle my car 24/7 hoping for that very thing to happen!

Pesky republicans? The credibility of this article dropped about 50% because you said that.

Next, they still show NO evidence. Just because a bunch of smart guys go into a room and come out saying this, doesn't mean it's true.

Just because a bunch of military guys go into a room and show a video of a Saddam look-alike, dosen't mean we really caught him. ;)

the mid-west might flood up into a new ocean? Great! ocean-front property is too expensive around here :D

That is why we have DNA evidence... nice try, though.

Oh right, since a military guy told us that, right? Gotcha ;)

Whoa, guys. Let's go back to climate change.

XZeroII (sorry you couldn't get just plain old "XZero"), you say "Next, they still show NO evidence. Just because a bunch of smart guys go into a room and come out saying this, doesn't mean it's true."

The position paper isn't there to offer evidence. It's there to say, "Hey, a bunch of serious, knowledgeable people think this is important." If you want "facts," there are tons of them posted on the Web. Why not trot some out instead of shooting from the hip?

The reason for my post was because of the apparent "fairness" of news articles. Ninety percent of the scientists say one thing, but when you hear it on the news, they have someone from the other side and that makes it sound like opinion is evenly divided. That's reasonable as a news presentation, but if you're interested in informing yourself about the issue, look around for studies. They're there.

Finally, XZ, go to the website for the AGU. They have a set of rules on what it takes to get them to issue a position paper. Here's a link, in case you have trouble locating it. Link.. One relevant quote is "As a scientific society, AGU should not take or advocate public positions on judgemental issues that extend beyond the range of available geophysical data or recognized norms of legitimate scientific debate." They're not saying what should be done, they're telling you what is happening.

i welcome global warming. i live 200ft above sea level so flooding isn't an issue. my town get its water from a river, were only limited by what the state allows us to take, and as far as i know we have NEVER had a water ban so drought isn't an issue. its 20F degrees out right now a little heat wouldn't be so bad. is there any reason why i should care about greenhouse gases?

Orgaized. I dunno. How do you interpret the following remark from the position paper.

" The hydrologic cycle will change and intensify, leading to changes in water supply as well as flood and drought patterns."

Hmmm, I don't think so (looks out front window), is Iowa dropping into a giant sinkhole? ;)

"Global Warming" and it's supposed effects are the biggest crock ever pulled on the public.

It's bad science and nonsense. WaterWorld is not about to happen within the next 1,000 years. There is this thing called weather... it varies, it always has. Then their is the not so tiny issue of actual temperature measurement and comparing it to standards used even 20 years ago.

There is no scientific merit to "global warming" and all the bad things that are supposed to come from it, if it is indeed happening, which is still unproven. It's still hot at the equator and cold at the North Pole and it's December and it's 20 degrees outside so don't be telling me the planet is heating up because it's all BS. :p

Good sarcasm - at least I hope it's sarcasm!

Well, CrazyFool. Would you post some evidence for those of us who don't know as much as you do?
