My prayer is simply this:

That people will be able to set aside partisan religious differences and seek knowledge and understanding of ourselves, others, and the mechanisms that govern this world in which we live. The goal is unrealistic, but in the seeking there is value. Let us be guided first by reason for, although it is a cold master, reason alone has the power to advance the human race.

It's is completely sad that you all feel this behavior is acceptable.

I guess tealk and I are the only ones who value their faith these days.

You guys, cut him some slack. One thing that all people should realize is that when somebody makes an attempt to convert them it is because that person cares about them and wants to share something they've experienced as good.

If you've ever complained about Christians damning someone to hell, you can't complain about people trying to convert you - it is their sincere attempt to keep you from what they view as a natural law of consequence. They don't wish you damned; the exact opposite.

tealk, when you say that you want transformation, also say transformation from what into what. When you talk about the love of Jesus Christ, explain what that means to you. When you invite people to let Jesus in their lives, spell out what you perceive that to do. Without that, people have no understanding of your motivation to pray for them and they do not know what you hope to accomplish beyond their stereotyped "win converts" perception.

I don't want them to condemn me or try to save me. I want them to leave me the hell alone.

If you really expected anything else in this thread...but what it turned out to be, then you really have no clue what kind of community anandtech is. It's a religion thread. this is exactly what happens to all religion threads. its been like this since i first signed up, and it'll never change.

You want to celebrate your faith, fine, go ahead. But don't complain when threads like this don't get all pro-god and pro-prayer replies.

You've been here long enough. You should know better.

I can see that side of things.

However, it can easily be viewed as intensely condescending. Many people view someone saying that, "I'm praying for you" as a self-important snipe by the party engaging in prayer. Saying that you will pray for someone implies that you believe prayer is necessary and that you know better than the person for whom you are praying. What many professing Christians simply do not understand is that most people do not want to be prayed for. They see no need for it and will interpret a professing Christian who prays for them to be claiming superiority.

Telling a person who believes differently that "I will be praying for you" is, in my opinion, one of the most smug, arrogant, and self-important things a person can do and I do not believe that it falls within the realm of following Christ. If one does pray for those who believe differently, one should not mention it to those for whom the prayers are said.

Prayer is between an individual and his God. Public prayer is little more than putting on a show of piety.

Exactly. If someone tells me they are praying for me, I immediately assume they see me as a hellbound sinner, some wretched mongrel who needs pity from their God to live. It's no different than if I told you I was going to do everything in my power to steer natural selection so ignorant savages who believe in a mystical sky fairy were weeded out of the gene pool. I don't do that. I don't care what you believe, but if you start pushing it down my throat and taking a holier than thou attitude, don't expect me to bend over backwards to kiss your ass and be thankful.

Valid. It's just good to also know, while still holding your own feelings, that the only reason they want to try to save you is because they care.

My gift to those who don't want conversion attempts:
Luke 4 is where Jesus commands his apostles to leave people alone if they don't want to hear it.

4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them."

Good effort Tealk!

Edit: It's sad when even the mods come out to not only participate...but allow the thread bashing/trolling.

I pray that all evangelicals will fuck off and die.

I'm embarassed to admit that when falwell died last year my first reaction was "good, what a relief - he has caused so much strife".

The op is, of course, trolling. My only question is for what - flagellation?

Faith isn't anything of value, anyway...

Funny. I just never saw it that way. It's my sneaking suspicion that all people want to be right about all the big questions in life. I know I do. It hurts like hell to admit that I don't know something, but if I don't then there's no helping it. A religious conversion attempt can be seen along these lines as well. If I convert you to whatever religion it is that I happen to believe in, then you necessarily must abandon your previous world-view and adopt mine. This proves that I was right...to me anyway, or at least it reinforces my sense of rightness. My philosophy has proven to be superior either to your philosophy or your ability/willingness to argue for it. This is a form of domination in which I am the clear victor over my weaker minded adversary come co-worshiper.

Of course this "me" I'm speaking of isn't the real me, although I share his essential weaknesses. I want to be right. I derive pleasure from being proven right, and every time I am I feel enormously better about myself and whatever notion it was that I managed to pass off as "Truth". The only problem is that I can't quite be certain that everyone is like to me in this regard so my suspicion will never be a certainty. I do still suspect nevertheless.
