<< 3dfx has done now what those who know the industry have wondered about ever since they bought STB: they have gone back to being a supplier. They can leave marketing the boards to the various other publishing houses... or can they? 3dfx burned a lot of bridges when they cut to being a board manufacturer. Diamond Multimedia, one of their old big names, is dead. Creative Labs and 3dfx aren't exactly on kind terms, given that the two are still involved in a lawsuit over Creative's "Unified" driver set (a Glide wrapper). STB is still ostensibly in 3dfx's camp, but what will it take to make them self-sufficient again? Most of the minor publishing houses are kicking out GeForce and GeForce 2-based boards, and may not be thrilled with the prospect of running a Voodoo X boardset as compared to its impact on their relationship with the king of graphics right now, NVidia? >>
