glazed rotors?

So, this guy at work brought his car in for an oil change. They said that his rotors are glazed and that he needs to turn them or get new ones...


WTF...don't pads get glazed, not rotors?
 
If the pads are glazed, the rotors are probably discolored and have surface micro cracks from the heat.

I have some emery cloth I found at Harbor Freight of all places and as soon as I get a chance, I will be pulling my wheels to attempt this on my rotors. If that doesn't get the deposits off, I will get a cheap set of semi-metallic pads to try and scrub them "clean."

Please read it again:

"...vigorous scrubbing with garnet paper may remove the deposit.... Do not use regular sand paper or emery cloth as the aluminum oxide abrasive material will permeate the cast iron surface and make the condition worse."
 
Sorry, I mixed it up. It is garnet paper that I found at HF, but never found elsewhere. I had the emory cloth term stuck in my head and couldn't remember the other...
 
Whats the recommended maintenance interval on the headlight fluid for modern cars?

Should be easy to find some used rotors from a write-off they are rarely damaged in totalled cars.

depends on what type of headlights you have.

I know of a place online that sells it in bulk.

What do you define as easy? Calling around to local salvage yards, having them tell you to come look for yourself, scrounging around, pulling parts off yourself? Or finding some type of salvage parts auction and trying to pick some up there? Or is there some other mythical way that you can easily buy ridiculously common salvage parts? All to save a few $10 bills?

Easy is finding the best price on the internet and clicking BUY NOW. Or walking your cheap ass down to the local auto parts store. Easy is not buying salvage parts. How freaking retarded.
 
You know the local dealer told me the same thing the other day after I had my tires mounted and alignment done.

They said my rotors were glazed and had heat spots and needed to be resurfaced($250)
They also said my power steering fluid was dirty and needed to be flushed and replaced($270)

Car has 37.7k miles, 5 years old.

Called a local place and they said $50 per axle for the rotors and $95 for the power steering

for the rotors, 50 an axle is good. my rotors cost me 45 a piece. for the power steering, i replaced the pump, both hoses and the pitman arm and added new fluid for under 200 bucks (pitman was like 90bucks). i did it due to a bad gearbox, the fluid was relatively clean and new. PSA: dont let leaking power steering hoses go too long, it will fuck up thte pump as well as the gearbox if you let it go for 4 months like i did. only reason i had to replace the pitman arm is that i let it run too hot for too long, and it was pretty much welded onto the gearbox. luckily the parts co took it as a core with it still attached hehe.
