Glasses or Contact Lenses?

As I sit here, wearing my very first pair of glasses after being a contact lense user for 6 years, I wonder, why the hell do people wear glasses over contact lenses?

I mean, I guess if you lose things easily or if you have a problem with touching your eyes, but really, these things stink. It's like looking through a fish bowl and everytime you look up, down, or to the sides, everything is blurry.

They told me that I need to wear glasses the last few hours before I sleep so I can give my eyes a rest from wearing contacts.. and I have to blow off steam 'cause they're bothering the heck out of me.

Why I wear glasses -

1) You can take them on and off at will

2) I personally don't get that "eyestrain" feeling as often with glasses as I do w/ contacts. If I do get a headache from my glasses, refer to #1

3) One time up front cost

4) Easier to keep track of

5) My girlfriend thinks I look very "smart and sexy" (her words) in glasses. So did several others that I dated :)

6) Glasses are an easy was to change "your look" if you are into that type of thing

But if you're wearing glasses, it's just as easy to change your look by wearing contacts.

I take my hard lenses on and off when I need to, I just bring along my slim contact case. There actually is no reason to take them off unless you are prone to getting headaches.

BTW, I rarely lose a contact, so I make one upfront payment about once a year, because this is when I get my eyes updated and get new ones.

I guess it really depends on what type of person you are and some things you can't help, like headaches from eye strain.

But if being careless is something your prone to, then I can see glasses being just as bad (my best friend brakes his glasses or loses them every so often).

I wear glasses. I used to wear contacts, and I still have a few sets (disposable), that I use very occasionally.

I choose to wear glasses, because of my eye health. Contacts deprive your eyes of oxygen, especially when you leave them in overnight. In the long run, glasses are better for your eyes. Ask any eye care professional.

For that unique geek look. Do people take you more seriously when you wear them?

Both - contacts during the day, glasses at night. I love my contacts. They're so much more convenient than glasses. You can wear sunglasses, you can't feel them, they're not in the way,...

A lot of people (especially women) will tell you that glasses make you look more intelligent. Not intelligent in a "genius" way, but in a witty way.

Why the heck are you wearing your contacts over night? That is the complete opposite of what any good doctor will tell you. Actually, you're right about the day use though, you aren't supposed to leave them in all day long, which is actually the reason why I have these glasses now, for the few hours a day that I'm supposed to let my eyes rest from contacts.

I don't wear contacts overnight. But I know some people do.

Raspewtin, I can't wait until I am able to get the surgery.

I'm just saying, if you follow what the doctors tell you, then they aren't any better or worse than glasses, health wise. Actually, when I first got my contacts, the doctor showed me a study in a recent (for that time) health magazine showing how in the long run, your vision stays much more stable wearing contacts than glasses.

I'm trying to get the gold fish out of my fish bowl perception.. grrr.. darn glasses.

Yeah, I've heard that as well (about your vision staying more stable.)

But I've probably been to three or four different eye doctors in the past, and they've all told me about the deprivation of oxygen. They even showed me where my capillaries in my eyeballs had lengthened (showing that the eye is "reaching" to get more oxygen), because of wearing contacts.

In an extreme case, if the capillaries reach the iris/pupil, you can have permanent eye damage. Of course, this is under extreme circumstances.

By all means, I'm not saying NOT to wear contacts. Just take care of your eyes.

Btw, you'll get used to the fishbowl effect, and won't even notice it. The part that bothered me the most, was when I'd turn around, to back my car out. And then I'd be looking around my glasses. That really bugged me, when I switched.

BTW, this is completely off topic but I just read your sig Wingznut. I actually met Ali when I was about 11 years old. He really is one great guy. Even though he was a bit slow (not exactly his fault) he was a really lovable guy and even did magic tricks. Man that was a great day, brings back memories.

Sorry for being so off topic, just had to let that one out.

Things I don't miss about contacts:

Getting something in your eye, under the contact. Once, while driving no less, I got an eyelash stuck under a contact. I can't even explain how much that hurt.

Putting your contacts in, in the morning. And taking them out at night. Especially late nights, when I'm real tired.

Cleaning them. Pain in the @ss. But not so much of an issue with disposable ones.

Losing one. It's only happened a few times... where I dropped one and had to search for it. Only once, did I actually lose one.

Discomfort, due to allergies. When I have allergies, my contacts don't fit right, because my eyes swell up.

Eye sensitivity. With contacts, my eyes are much more sensitive to smoke, light... basically everything. They probably actually aren't more sensitive. Just more easily irratated.

There are contacts designed to allow oxygen to pass through them. I wear them.:)

It's still not a good idea to keep them in for too long, though, because the oxygen doesn't pass through the contacts as well as it does air.

The contacts can transfer air, because they are made up primarily of water. So yeah, oxygen gets to the eye, but it is still deprived some.

Heh, your eye wouldn't last too long with no oxygen at all. ;)

Midnight, exactly what do you mean by "failed"?

Midnight,

Really? I've yet to meet one. I've met people who needed a second surgery for fine tuning, but never anyone who went blind, or could not be corrected after additional surgery. However you're correct there is risk in the surgery; one of the best gambles I ever took. I had itdone , and it was one of the best things that happened to me. No words can express the joy of waking up and being able to see, going to water parks and being able to have fun and see, to see underwater, to never have glare that glasses sometimes do, or dirty haze contacts can. It's like a new sense of freedom.

i got contacts about 3 months ago. Glasses made my eyes and temple hurt. With contacts i barely notice and a lot of the time i fall asleep with them. Plus glasses look crappy and are like $250 for a good pair. i'm only 19 so i cant have that lasik done yet, but when i'm like 24-25 i figure it'll be good enough that i'll do it.

It depends on which one of my personalities has taken over.

If I am in brainy woman mode, and want people to take me seriously, I wear my glasses.

If I doing a sport or going out socially, I wear my contacts.

I might consider the surgery one day, but one of my sisters had it and one of her eyes was corrected but then weakened again---not a lot, but enough to be disturbing. We call that eye "Algernon" now.... (it will make my day if someone gets that reference...)

Time for coffee...
