"Switchable glass can costs hundreds of dollars per square foot," said Lisa Gonzalez, president and CEO of Design Alternatives in Santa Clara.

That article was from 2001. I wonder how much prices have gone down since then.

Yeah it would be easy enough to just have a cable-operated thing that flips a cover over the license plate as you scream through the toll plaza without paying.

Actually, I've seen and heard from "people" that they sell a smoked/opaque license plate cover that isn't viewable by photographic equipment unless they are dead straight on.

It is difficult to see the plate numbers with the naked eye at an angle as well but still can be read. They can be construed as illegal by your local popos.

"Supposedly" any photos taken of your rear plate by an electronic toll booth camera will not come out properly... ;)

might as well just flip the plate backwards if you're just trying to hide your numbers.

Don't we all...

I wish all my car windows would go opaque at the touch of a button. I could turn my windows "off" whenever I park.

We have a couple of meeting rooms where I work that do this. We can always tell when the directors are meeting or they're trying to impress a high-profile client because they will turn the glass opaque for those meetings. Pretty dang cool. Especially considering that these are 12+ foot tall walls and they were installed in '88 when the building was put up.
