So, Christmas is come & gone and the wife picked me up just *any* pair of sunglasses.

The ones she got me were "Killer Loop" and they were almost perfect......(wife got really close. Kudos to her)........but they didn't really wrap & I'm weird about light in the sides.

Anywhoooo............

I exchanged 'em for another pair today that *weren't* polarized & I dunno. One of the first things I noticed was that I could see my hands' reflection in the windshield. But they look soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cooooooooooooooooooool!!!!! :cool:

So, ya.....if I'm gonna spend $120 on a pair of shades, I guess I'll fork over the $150 on *polarized*..............BUT..........that's if I go w/ *glass* lenses. Should I forget glass???

Glass = better, clear......but.....heavier

PC = lesser/not as good......but......lighter

??????

Go with polarized lenses. They make such a huge difference, especially for me. Driving in the winter in Montana is just a blanket of snow everywhere and boating in the summer the glare from the water is unbearable.

I wear glass for casual (Revo) and polycarbonate for anything that I might damage them doing (Rudy Project). Of course, Rudy Project has a great deal where they'll replace damaged lenses for $15, no questions asked.

Ahhh..........I can see this is going to be a much tighter poll than the Polarized vs. Non thread!! He he he he!!!!!

FWIW............THESE are the shades I have in my hand right now. A couple things that don't fit per SH's description.

#1.) They are MUCH more mirrored *and* silvery than shown. (Thus the reason I'm even considering non-polarized)

#2.) These are absolutely NOT *gradient* lenses. They are same shade, top to bottom.

They *do* have a *polarized* version of this style, but it's not on the SGH website (no, not the flight extreme either) but they just don't look as good as the non-polarized 'cuz the lens isn't mirrored and it just takes away the "silvery" look of the whole style.

????? :(

Glass is much harder though.

Photgray Glass FTW/

I have worn glasses to see things over 3 foot away; in focus, since 1969.

In 1973 I bought my first Photogray, Glass lenses.

Plastic just plain, and simply, Bites.

Plastic glasses scratch so fast, that you should just buy $14.95 or Cheaper glasses.

The plastic lenses scratching easy, is true of corrective, And, Non- corrective
glasses. {Sunglasses}

When I go to purchase new prescription glasses, aprox every 3 years,
I remind the store, Glass lenses.

The lady that works there, said to me;
you have owned, both, plastic And glass lenses before,
because Most people that have worn both Hate plastic.

Glass is slightly better optically, but it has MANY downsides.

Scratches easier than plastic.
Breaks easier than plastic or polycarbonate (duh).
Glass is heavier.
Blocks much less UV. While any lenses (glass, plastic, or polycarbonate) block most UVB and UVC, glass without extra chemicals or coatings added is actually transparent to UVA. Polycarbonate is especially good at blocking UV.

I would go with the polycarbonate, even if the glass was a bit cheaper.

I thought there were mirroed polarized lenses. In any case, you can't see the mirroring, so you decid-- functionality vs looking fly.

Hmmmm...........I was of the understanding that the glass was *harder* to scratch than plastic/polycarbonate.

Yes, I will agree that these are a little heavy, but I dunno if that's good/bad/indifferent.

???

I hate to say goodbye to these non-polarized flights, but......:(.......se la vi.

:cool:

Hmmm.............50%/50% on the poll...............DEFINITELY much tighter than polarized vs. non!!

;)

Also for the earlier poster.........apparently.....(or at least as I was told).......the glass has superior "optics" to plastic/poly and was definitely MORE expensive......

In the RayBans I looked at it pretty much went like this.........

Poly non-polarized = $99
Poly polarized = $119

Glass non-polarized = $119
Glass polarized = $159

:shocked:

Polycarbonate is avaliable in different grades,and is more impact resistant,
than glass,but is Not more scratch resistant than glass for 16+ hour a day use.

You have no clue; about glass being more easy to scratch.

Do you wear glasses almost every moment your awake?I do and have since March 1969.

Go buy some plastic prescription glasses,and wear them for 6 months every day;
in the meantime, I shall wear my Glass glasses for 3 years,and they will have less
scratches.I have some Glass lenses that are over 10 years old.

Glass lenses don't need a "coating" to make them scratch resistant.

If you wear your glasses for an hour a day,plastic will last a Long time with care.

If however you wear them, basically non-stop, and are not indoors, most of the time,
they will get dirty, and when you clean them off, is how, most often they get scratched;

unless you are careless when you set them down, then they get scratched from that. ;)

Hey caveman,

I know that prescription and "polarized" is even more a topic (methinks) than glass/poly.

Do you have any feedback in regards to polarized lenses??

TIA!

Have the best of both worlds. Have the glasses made up as polycarbonate safety glasses. They will be as thick as the glass ones with the polycarb price.

LOL!!!!

Sure thing. I'm sure the 15.5yr old at Sunglass Hut will get right on that for me......har har!!!

;)

I dunno..........I need to really go back and look at the SGH again and see their shades again.

I think if I could find a good poly set, I'd probably go for 'em just to keep from paying so much for shades in general.

But, the glass look so good.

No promoting here........just found a site that shows me a bit of part# breakdown. Mine say......"RB 3190 FLIGHT 005/40".........which I don't see in THISmatrix, but it shows similar part #'s.

So I guess the ones I have now are considered "Flight Rectangle". But mine have frosty silver frames and VERY mirrored lenses which make 'em look sooooo dang cool!

I had some rayban clubmaster which lasted me 10 years. Great glasses - glass lenses, yadaa. Frames finally broke. I bought a pair of top end Maui Jims Poly's after an exhaustive search for great glass lenses glasses. Can't say I'm dissapointed. Good glasses. I was hardcore glass, now I like my Poly's. If its got the features you want, go for them.

OK, I'll try & not make this sound like a fumbled mess........

Here's an EXCELLENT pic I found of the model I have now.......... PIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, according to this chart........... HERE.........you can see where my "005/40" are silver/mirror.

What I think I saw today was the "004/48" which is why not only the lens looked less flashy, but the frame too.

I wonder if the "005/48" would make me feel better about giving up the "mirror" lenses for "polarized"???

(I think I'm set on these "flights" now) :p
