So I'm watching a bit of Spartacus and wondered if anyone knows of any games where you assume the role of lanista to train and fight gladiators?

Not off the top of my head, but it would make a cool game imo.

The closest thing I can think of is the Arena in Oblivion, that was pretty fun, but not exactly what you're talking about, you just fight as your character through a series of arena competitors until you become grand champion. Looking back, that was probably my favorite thing about that game :)

It appears that Skyrim has a number of gladiator mode mods, but none that I see focus on the Lanista role.

Oblivion had plenty of mods to make The Arena a lot deeper. Larger arena, more combatants, leagues, training, etc.

Yea I was thinking more of a strategy game type thing. I wonder why no one has done this, like a historically accurate monster rancher with political meta game.

I'd say as far as more recent single player games go Skyrim is probably the best for this type of play. The problem is that the enemy AI is not that great.
