Glad I revisited Chrono Trigger on the DS

I first played Chrono Trigger with a buddy on the SNES over a couple of weekends many years ago when it first came out. I forgot how good of a story it had and it is still one of the best paced RPGs I've had the pleasure of playing. Never really felt pressured to grind, but I did have to experiment and think during most battles, which seems to be very rare for RPGs these days too. The new areas in the DS version were just icing on the cake, as I didn't know about the new content. The new CG cutscenes were a nice addition, and it's also nice to have the option to turn off the CG if you want to go old school too.

I'm enjoying just maximizing my characters at this point, as I have the best gear from the original SNES game on all my characters and even farmed some speed and strength tabs from the Black Omen area in different eras. Doing 1500+ HP crits on the endgame bosses is just epic, and who needs to cast haste when you're hopped up on speed tabs amiright!

Chrono Trigger DS is probably the definitive version of the game. The cutscenes were from the PSX version but the DS version doesn't suffer from load times. As you mentioned you can essentially play either version, plus there are added options like relegating UI to the bottom screen and using the stylus to interact with it (if you want to).

This reminds me that I'm at the end of the game and I need to go back and finish it. I've never actually completed Chrono Trigger before. 😱

Back in the old SNES version I beat Chrono Trigger 8 times through complete start to finish doing a New Game + everytime. I was trying to get every character to level 99 with as high of stats as possible, which requires needing to play through again to get more tabs. I've also seen every ending several times each. I think when I finally stopped playing the only character not at level 99 was Magus. He was at like 92.

Yeah, it's kinda funny because I have the PSX version, but wanted it to be portable. That and Amazon.com had it for $12 about a month ago and I just can't resist a good deal.

It's kinda funny how many of the old Final Fantasy (namely Final Fantasy 3, 4, and 5) games I've finished on the NDS and just older RPGs in general. I hated load times on the PSX versions, but I still keep them just to keep my collection complete on the Playstation 2 and 3. Heck, I play Final Fantasy 7, 8, and Tactics from the PSN digital download service just so I don't have to break out the discs. I am just lazy that way I suppose, and I justify it by saying I'm keeping my physical copies in mint condition. 🙂

You mean level star-star? 😉 Magus was one of my first characters to hit max level because his AoE magic is so good. I just farmed the hell out of the robot factory's conveyor belt and Magus' Dark Mist ( I think that's the name... it was a dark mist that traveled from the bottom to the top ) would one-shot the mobs with lower mana costs than moves like Crono's Luminaire or relying on combos.

EDIT:

My brother and I would actually argue/debate over which game was better: FF6 or CT. Those were the carefree days 😛.

CT is in my top 5 games of all time. Absolutely amazing game. I think I might start a new save tonight...

I played CT for the first time earlier this year and I enjoyed it, but I guess it didn't really strike me like it did for others. Personally I enjoyed Super Mario RPG, Actraiser and Link to the Past more. At least as far as similar era/genre titles go.

I tried Super Mario RPG this year, and got bored really quickly...

Maybe these types of games you have to be kids to play for the first time?

Although I did play Seiken Densetsu 3 for the first time and loved it.

Mario RPG was my first RPG. I can't explain why, but the ones that came before it didn't interest me too much at the time. I think it's because I was much, much more casual when I was a kid. I just liked Mario games a lot, so I got Mario RPG, and was confused as hell. When I got into the first battle I was like "Wtf is this? A separate screen that I fight on? And I take turns with the enemy?" I love RPG's now 🙂

Was it ** level? It's been a good while since I played it I can't recall. My level farm area was the island where you get the Rainbow Shell. Not too far from the entrance there was a treasure chest near a door that if you got too near 3 dinos would attack. You could get attacked, go through the door and come back out, step near the chest, and they'd be there again and attack. Crono with the gold stud on can pull of 19 Luminaires before needing to regain MP. The Luminaire would kill the dinos in one hit. And Crono was fast enough that I could select the option to Luminaire before the dinos could attack. If I remember correctly that easily repeatable battle got you 1440 experience. Which was the highest repeatable experience gain I could find.

this thread makes me sad.. CT, FF6, FF7 and then what do we have now? FF14? what a total slide into disgrace.. 🙁

Me too. I fondly remember playing through Chrono trigger, FF3(US), FF4(US) and other RPGs on the SNES. It seems all of the gameplay went south as soon as the graphics got pretty. Shame to see what Square Enix is giving us now compared to the SNES days. At least we were around for the good stuff.

CT was one a memorable gaming experience. Still holds up well today. I wish I could time travel back to when it first came out

I will never forgive Square Enix for the atrocity that is FF 13. I will definitely read more reviews and probably even rent the game before purchasing next go around. Also, a controller optimized (FF 14 anyone) MMO is just ridiculous.

I personally would like to see a Xenogears PSP.

I remember the cut scenes and some battles in that game taking forever. You really need to set aside a block of time to play Xenogears because saves were few and far between at times. Still...excellent game.

Yep, I now have limited time to play PS3 as I am married and have a baby to take care of. After putting about 5-8 hours into FF13 I traded in for store credit. I was so annoyed with that game on so many levels.

Just because you didn't like it means that FF13 was a terrible game. I loved it, but I also realized it wasn't what most people were looking for.

Wasn't FF11 controller optimzed too? The short duration I actually played it, it seriously felt like it was meant for controller first, mouse/keyboard second.

FF13 was an atrocity because it was a numbered Final Fantasy game. However, my reverence for the series is starting to wane because of games like X-2 and 13. Not to mention the MMOs being part of the series now.

Ok, back on topic, I'm going to try and get my Dreamseeker sword tonight. Wish me luck against the new ultimate boss. My level 72 team of Crono, Ayla, and Robo rapes face now.

I still remember gathering my cash up when this game came out and plunking down ~$75 to get this on a Friday afternoon... I don't think I slept much that evening!

Ahh I remember back in the day the first time I played through I called Robo "R2-D2" and I called Frog "Kermit."

I thought I was so clever . . .
