As much as the front face looks the same, I like it overall.

It's still the iPhone OS though, so I won't like it. But the more solid design, it's like Apple said "let's take the HTC HD2 and mix it with the iPhone."
 
They picked a great phone to breed with the iPhone though. The iPhone and HD2 (IMHO) are probably the 2 sexiest phones on the market. The new Droid Incredible looks nice, but the battery door is beyond ugly.
 
Too bad they didn't make the screen bigger. Supposedly the resolution will be higher, but there's so much unused space above and below the screen. Make the thing just a touch wider and it could get a 3.7 or 4" screen.
 
Too many seams and buttons for an iPhone. Maybe a prototype?

Edit. Interesting story. It's either a prototype (come on, an iPhone with phillips screw heads?) or a red herring Apple planted to combat leaks.

Now: The new iPhone's "boxy" form factor is a big improvement over the curved edges of the older models.

Seriously guys? Is that the best you can come up with? Not aimed at anyone in this thread, but the Apple fanboy (which describes Gizmodo as a whole) who wrote those impressions.
 
Funny, looks just like the N810 I recently got, which itself is about 2 years old. My money says "fake". Definitely not Apple-like in design.

How can you be convinced its fake? Did you see all of the convincing evidence of it being real? Between what ive seen on gizmodo and engadget, I am 100% convinced it is real. Otherwise someone went thru a *TON* of work to convince us that it is real.

I've never owned an iPhone, and until quite recently, never even entertained the thought of getting one. I'm the farthest thing from an Apple fanboy, but I've just recently started playing with the idea of getting an iPhone, simply because I'm very bored with the BlackBerry OS, and Android is getting stale too. Not because it's a bad OS (although it isn't without its flaws), or it doesn't work for me, I'm just, simply put; bored with it. I want to play with a new OS. I used to do nothing but talk shit about the iPhone, and I've never even used one for more than 5 minutes. I'm waiting to see if VZW gets an iPhone, because if they don't, I might be saying bye bye once the new iPhone comes out.

That said, I agree with you about the Giz journalist's fanboy tone. I'm on the fence about the new design. It's different, and definitely not ugly, just not quite what I expected from Apple. I really want to see how it feels in my hand.

Front facing camera = awesome. I don't think there's anything bad that could be said about it. Video conferencing will be awesome, no doubt (with adequate reception, of course). Off the top of my head, I can think of all kinds of cool and useful uses for it. And I could be mistaken, but don't European carriers already have phones with front facing cameras?

And I can't really say much about the flat back, since every phone I've owned has a flat back. I did really like the curved back on the 3GS (the few times I played with one), but it's not a deal breaker.
 
i don't understand why they wouldn't do a full teardown and take a look at the CPU/Ram inside that thing. that's what I really care about...

Thats not the 'iPhones' problem. Its the networks problem. Its like blaming a laggy online game on the manufacturers of the actual game.

2. Gizmodo's story about finding it is bullshit. No way would they take it apart if Apple said they wanted it back... without Apple's permission...
3. Not increasing the screen size sucks. I'm not downgrading that much from the HD2. I'll probably still switch to the EVO when my 6 month wirefly etf runs out.

but my point remains. How is it so awesome if the only network that (currently) offers that phone can't support it?
 
Front facing camera is worthless if video conferencing isn't in yet. it takes far too much horsepower for skype video. That's why phones don't have it yet.

Front facing cameras have been around for a long time on other phones. It's mainly because in other countries you can make video calls.

Well, as an individual who 1) owns not 1 product created by Apple, and 2) despises the iPhone OS, and 3) despises the design style of all Apple products...

I like this concept they have there. Would I own it? No, because it's still the iPhone OS. Not to mention, I'm keeping my Droid until Verizon carries 4g (LTE) phones, and most likely, the next phone will be another Android phone.

But the industrial design of this one, over the shitty, seamless, toy-like design of all previous Apple entries, just looks awesome. The boxy, rounded-square design... I really like it.

It's essentially why I chose the Droid over other phones: the hard angles are pure win imho.
 
If this is real and it looks like it is I'm not going to replace my 3G with this and will more than likely switch to the Evo. By my subjective observation the screen size is no larger and perhaps even smaller than the 3G I now have and that is the deal breaker for me. I want a larger higher resolution display and the new iPhone is not larger.

The other obvious thing is the boxier sides and this I do like. I think this feature will make it easier to hold and use as a phone and the increased volume this provides the case will help permit the larger battery -- also a good thing.

There does seem to be some nice features in the new OS as well but once again I think HTC has surpassed them and I will bypass them!

I think Giz said the screen was physically smaller but had a higher resolution. I do think the iPhone's screen is a little on the small side, but the larger screened devices probably won't gather the mass market appeal that a device with a screen the size of the iPhones can.

Pretty much Apple feels the screen is "big enough" for most people out there.

Yea, the screen size is an area where you will never be able to please everyone. I like the phone/screen size and do not want it to go any bigger. Any larger and it becomes too bulky and cumbersome in my pants or jacket. On the other hand, some people would love a 4+ inch screen.

Oh I'm sure Jobs feels the screen size is perfect and not in need of increasing, but if HTC and others with larger displays begin to cut into Apples share of the market even Jobs may have to reconsider. Other than the screen size the new iPhone looks appealing to me -- it is just a shame to me that the display is no larger.

Perhaps Apple is concerned there design choice is sub optimal and perhaps that's why they are going after HTC. If there were a similar level of apps development for Android as there is for Apple, and there isn't, then the hardware leapfrog that HTC has made would put a nail in Apples coffin, but since Apple has a couple year lead in apps the Evo and other Android smart phones have a big hill to climb -- no matter the hardware advantage.

I do think it is just possible that the new iPhone we are looking at is actually a trial balloon and it would be interesting to know if the guts would fit into a 3G/3GS back. That is, the new boxier look may be a test to see how the public responds and if the reaction is highly negative they may go back to the more curved/rounded look of old. Again, it would be interesting to see if the guts for the new phone can fit into the back cover of a 3GS...
