Because once you give advice, that person will keep coming back to you everytime they can't figure something out. It gets old real quick.

Because they're asked on a fairly regular basis to perform a relatively skilled task for little or no compensation, usually with little to no gratitude.

I used to do that many many years ago... now I don't help anymore unless they are really close family members... Once you help them once, u are stuck with them... their computers become your responsbility forever...

but if people are really that stupid then shouldn't they be more likely to show that gratitude? and then wouldn't that gratitude be more than enough compensation? i could think of a lot more strenous favors to provide someone..

most people will show gratitude (at least in my experience), it's just so frustrating that they're so unwilling to learn for themselves. rather than, say, googling "how to share a DSL connection", they'll call me and expect me to set it all up for them. then if something goes wrong, I'm the first person they call, since they have no idea how it works.

I'll do tech support for my friends and family, but the understood rule is that I'm going to take my sweet arse time getting it done. if my best friend wants his cable modem working in the next 10 minutes, he should call up Comcast.

I get annoyed when I have to explain the SAME THING over and over. Besides that, I don't mind helping.

I've been given 2 old computers from people at work I've helped. One of which I sold for $100 and the other I used some of the parts, for my daughter's computer.
