Giving my dad a comp, he's pretty inexperienced.

I intend to give him his own user with minimized rights, but the problem I usually run into is he usually encounters some of those boxes for installing stuff on his computer, and he clicks yes if they ocntinue to pester him. He's not proficient enough in computers to chain click no and alt +f4 rto close that window. I'm going to put an antivirus on it also. He'll mainly use it for browsing, word, excel, and e-mail.

Any help is appreciated. I was going to post this in GH, then in software, but I wasn't quite sure where so here it is ;)

When you really think about it, thjere's some pretty tricky ways to put spyware on. There was that viewpoint thing, even I fell for that spyware installation box. It was very well done, and I know my dad would fall for it. So bsaically I'm looking for a third party software to save him, paranoia isn't enough ;)

Haha, both my parents got laptops and I tried idiot proofing them, not possible. They always manage to find someway to break something eventually, so I get phonecalls and the occasional laptop shipped to me to fix.

My only advice to you is patience, haha.

restricted user levels? Install firefox. System restore. It screws up, you transfer over files/emails, restore, then put in the files/emails again.

I convinced my mom to get something with tech support so she wouldn't have to call me. She bought a premade machine, and calls me everytime she has an issue.

Firefox. Restrict his access to IE and tell him if he uses it they will get his personal info. Use spybot to keep sh!t out (immunize) and send him to comcast forums. He can use my passwords. There are some paranoid motherfvckers over there and it seems contagious.

firefox, and make sure everything is fully patched. installing adaware with a regularly scheduled run is probably also a good idea.

also, tell him to click "no" to everything he sees on the internet, unless he knows exactly what he's clicking yes to.

Set up a firewall, make sure antivirus updates itself regularly, and use spywareblaster to prevent stuff from installing in the first place. Make sure he updates the definition periodically too. Ah oh, use Firefox.

make him non-admin- i.e. a regular user. restrict him from installing software and stuff.
