Giving Linux a static IP address

I just installed Debian Linux and it's happy getting a DHCP lease.

However, I want this machine to have server roles and it needs a static IP address. I managed to configure an IP address with ifconfig, but when I rebooted the machine it reverted back to a dynamic address.

How do I get my machine to use a static IP address? I'm not using a GUI shell so this needs to be done via command line.
