So I work at a grocery store stocking shelves. If you search hard enough you can find one of my posts about it. Anyway, our schedule is released every Thursday for the next week Sunday through Saturday.

I was offered a new job today and the job starts next week I will tell my boss tomorrow that I will finish out the rest of the week and then be finished. The problem I see is that Thursday is when the schedule comes out for the next week and I am probably scheduled for hours next week.

Is this a bad thing to do? In my defense I have not been happy with things that have been going on there and how I have been treated.

Yeah it is, I've worked there about a year and the job that I am taking I will be making %40 more an hour. My boss has talked behind my back so the way I figure it hes lucky I don't walk in there tomorrow and, give him the finger and walk right back out.

Here's what will happen if you use them as a reference for future employment:

HR: Did S Freud work there from xx/xx/xxxx through xx/xx/xxxx?
Store: Yes
HR: Is he eligible for re-hire?
Store: Yes (They can't say no unless you were fired for cause)

End of conversation.

Don't worry about it. You could leave tomorrow and it wouldn't matter. Go make more money.

Yeah, unless the grocery business is going to be your career, don't worry about it. Sure it's not very professional, but it's not like they need to spend a lot of time finding and training your replacement.

No worries. They wouldn't give you two weeks notice if they planned on firing you and you likely won't have it on your resume when you go for a professional level job anyway.

I gave less than 2 weeks at my job when I got hired at the place that would kick off my career. You might catch some flack from management, but if you are on good terms with them they'll see it as a good opportunity and will manage to work around your absence.

Thats just based on my experience though.

Yeah. It's a grocery store. You stock shelves. It's not like your the manager or something and are walking out.

Just tell him nicely that you have something else lined up and they want you to start right away so you're sorry but Saturday is your last day.

You'll be fine.

My new job needed someone pretty fast due to the main system admin leaving the country for a few weeks. He said 2 weeks would be okay but if i could make it one that would be great (in time for the guys vacation). I gave them 1 (full) weeks notice and fully documented all my procedures and happenings. The owner was pissed (my supervisor didn't care). He began lecturing me and telling me something about how he wouldn't trust someone willing to leave their job 'like that.' I shrugged. After he realized I could bring down the company he started being nice to me for the rest of the week.

Funny thing is when I asked for a raise there 3 months earlier (after 3 years of no raise) he basically said no, and you're getting laid off soon because we don't really need you. When he was lecturing me he went on about how he was doing me a favor giving me such a long notice before letting me go, as if I was supposed to be thankful. The day I quit he told my supervisor he's gotta go in a month cause he doesn't want to pay him anymore. A week after I quit he let go a few people including my supervisor (who'd been with them for 13 years, and after being told a month) out of the blue. Guess he was so pissed because he was planning on letting me a week later and didn't get to.

Where? I won't say who, but no one ranks better than them for "Fine custom fit shoes" on google. :)

This place was horrible to work. Anyway, you don't have to give up a reference just because you didn't like the place. You put in your time and got whatever experience it was. Bottom line--do what's best for you.
