My family is a bunch of pack rats and we have a lot of old computer hardware and otherwise that I would like to easily get rid of.

I came up with this idea that I could put a box in the front yard and put the computer equipment in the box and wrapped in plastic bags. Then I could put a sign over the box stating "PLEASE TAKE IT IS FREE". In the past, whenever I have put something on the sidewalk for garbage (besides garbage bags), it usually dissapears before the garbage men arrive.

I guess my concern is, do you think this would make my house a target for robberies. IE: someone notices all the stuff I am willing to give away for free and assumes the stuff inside must be much better and more valuable? Has anyone else done this and used it as a quick way of getting rid of old equipment / items? Is there a better way to go about doing this that does not require much effort on my part?

There's a good idea for you. Schools will most likely be glad to take it off your hands. Barring that, maybe try your local library?

Donating it could just be putting money in some rich person's pockets. Even if you donated to a school, the person in charge of buying the equipment could forge receipts for it and collect money. Does the "free" bin have to be out front of your house?

i think it depends on where you live

if it is too old/crappy to sell, it is probably too old/crappy to donate

just throw it away

Just put it outside with a sign that says"it works" I've done this many, many times and have never had a problem with robbery and actually felt good knowing that my used hardware was going to be put to good use:)
