What do you mean exactly by 3 HD combination...
the way i'd connect the drives would be 2 30 gb on ide 1 @ 100 raid, the 2 9gb on ide 2 @ 100 .. the cd rom on ide 3 @ 33 .. i'm assuming the mobo has 4 ide ports..

Even though I have 4 HD but I can only pick either Quantum or IBM as the third HD. The rest (4th drive) will be on a second system.
Anyhow, I get the picture based on your reply. 2X 30GB on the first IDE ATA100, the third one will be on the Secondary master and the CD-ROM will be on the Secondary slave. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you for your help.

Okay i had a look at the board...since it has 4 ide ports, unless you plan to use RAID setup, then the following config is better:
IDE 1, 30 gb @ ata100 on Highpoint controller
IDE 2, 30 gb @ ata100 on Highpoint controller
IDE 3, 9 gb @ata66 on VIA southbridge
IDE 4, cd-rom

Remember, only one channel at a time can be used by the IDE controller, so in the above config, the machine can talk to both 30 gb at the same time, while in the previous only 1 of the 30 gb can be accessed at 1 time...also the above config assumes that you will be using the 2 30 gb drives most of the time.... question do you plan to use RAID?

if you don't need a load of space, i would go grab a raid controller to use on those 2 30 gig suckers.

what can your RAID do? I'd do a 30GB partition, and then link the 2 9 GB drives into one drive. Can your RAID do that?

Guys, the board has the Highpoint ATA 100 RAID controller...i think it can do raid 0,1,0+1 plus the VIA southbridge which had ATA 66 support.. pretty neat.. my question was whether he plans to use the raid capacity or not.. even then I think that the second config will work better in both (raid/no raid) situations...

Thank you much for all the suggestion and help.

Based on someone experience with Video editing (at storagereview forum), he recommends not to use Raid configuration. One 30GB for capturing and the other 30GB for storing rendering and video footage (Min 5GB for approx. 20min of digital 8 video in slow motion). Anyhow, your configuration match exactly as per his suggestion.
