Give my co-worker car advice!

So my co-worker is in the market for a new car and he has made up a list of cars he test drove and is interested in.

Most of these cars cost around 23,000 + tax Canadian, with the G35 being the most expensive at 24,900 + tax and the Accord being the cheapest at 20,000 + tax.

The Ford Fusions he is interested in because his dad used to work at Ford and has employee pricing for life, so out the door with taxes and everything he can get a V4 Fusion with leather + a bunch of other upgrades for 28 k, 31 k for the V6 model with front wheel drive. Whichever Fusion model he chooses he saved around 7 k vs buying it retail from the dealer.

What would you guys recommend he get's considering he can get a good price. Also if anyone knows where I can look up Canadian car values online for free let me know 🙂

Thanks.

What is his driving dynamic and need for size?

If he does not care about size and likes sportness (ie single driver) i'd say go for the g35

If he likes being bored while he drives get the lexus or camry's

Can't comment on the Fusions since I don't know too much about them.

I myself got a 2007 Accord EX-L (i4) with Navigation for 23k CDN with 65000km last year around this time, which was before the prices rock bottomed on most cars so it was a steal at the time.

Has your friend looked at TL's?

He does a lot of city driving and wants something in that size range. He always wants comfort. He test drove a Volvo S60 and a Subaru (not sure which one) and said they were both too stiff/sporty and he likes these cars better.

He doesn't like the Infiniti because it's got pretty bad gas mileage and it's the most expensive of the bunch, plus repairs on them are a lot from what I hear.

He hasn't looked at any TL's, but I can recommend those to him.

That logic I should have got a 2008 Civic brand new, instead I got far more car

Wow, Fusion has 6 out of 8 votes so far!

I hear the V4 Fusions are impossible to find 😛

Fusion hands down. Partly because of

A new, optioned-up car over a used car any day. I'll take the I4 Fusion.

But partly because it's just a wonderful car (07 I4 owner here) and great value

So you guys are voting Fusion because it's new, cool, but what if he were to get a really good deal on the used cars. How much of a good deal would he have to get to get one of those over the Fusion?

Also how are the Fusions? Are they reliable?

Apperently 😉 But who cares, I tell people my dad has a V4 Camry all the time, becuase if you say I4, most people don't know what that is.

Same, with that logic I could of gotten the Nissan Altima 2.5 with nothing.. instead I got a better car with everything..

btw an 05 G35 is virtually the same as an 06.

All the other cars at best have 1 year of warranty left. So how good of a deal does he have to get on a used car to find out next month it needs a costly repair?

I like the Fusions. I like new cars. Price being equal here, which it appears as such, I'd go with a new car. I like electronic goodies, so if he can get an optioned up I4 for the same as a base V6, I'm going I4.

Toyota/honda's are so damn overpriced used I'd never recommend anyone buy one that's only a couple years old. Fusion is an awesome car.

Because you get a new car for the price of a 4 year old one with 50k miles. an 06 car is probably going to have small stuff start breaking/needing replaced within 20k of the 50k you're looking for, even a honda or infiniti. And when stuff does start falling off on an infiniti, you can bet it will be a pricier fix than a fusion. With a 4 year old car you already have 4 years worth or wear on your clearcoat and interior. IMO not worth it

I don't think anything is going to start falling off those cars anytime soon, especially the Lexus. I myself bought a used 2001 Lexus in 07 with 63,000 km on it. Now it has 127,000 km and all I did was change the oil and tranny fluid.

Let's say he could get that Lexus for 6-7 k less than the Fusion, good deal?

And it's not miles sir, this is Canada you APE!

I voted Fusion but yeah the G35 is a nice looking car.

The guy has to figure out his priorities..

Loaded I4 Fusion will have lots of toys, take regular gas, return good gas mileage, and it'll be a brand new car with a full warranty (they seem to have been quite reliable anyway). It's not gonna be a flashy car, but it'll be comfortable and it handles well enough.

The G35X.. you're buying used so you gotta hunt for the one with the options you want and either take it or leave it. Takes premium and gets worse gas mileage, warranty is almost(?) up, it's already got a good amount of miles on it... but it is more of a luxury vehicle with slightly better dynamics and has more prestige.. so like I said it depends on where his priorities are.

What is he going to use the car for and what is his fuel / maintenance budget?

If he's not decently well-off and this is a daily driver, he shouldn't get something that's going to be hard on gas and costly to repair like a G35. If he's making 60-70k+ a year, then it's less of an issue. Since everything else on the list is used, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume he doesn't have a ton of money to throw around (that's not to say he's cheap or poor, but he's certainly not shopping for a new BMW or Lexus), so I'd suggest the Fusion. V6 vs. I4 depends on what options he wants (sacrificing the more powerful engine for fewer options to keep the price the same) and what he wants the fuel economy to be like. For me, I wanted the power of the V6. I manage about 24-25 MPG combined (~60% city, 40% highway) and I'm NOT easy on the throttle. When I take it really easy (feathering the throttle to accelerate, coasting as much as possible, etc.), I get between 27 and 29 MPG without too much trouble.

Just for the record, V engines are called such because the cylinders are arranged in a V-shape. On the other hand, inline (I) engines have a single bank of cylinders in a straight line. So, as a poor example, if you took two inline four cylinder engines and arranged them in a V configuration (with the tops pointing outward), you'd have a V8.

Why the hell would you want to buy the fusion 4 banger new? You will get absolutely destroyed by fleet cars in the used market.

Get a fusion 1-2 years old with 20K miles, you'll get a virtually identical car and save 50% of the price.

I couldn't find any tangible difference between the Ford lease cars we've had over the years - same car at delivery and turn in.

Because the new body style is much much nicer. And there aren't that many used 2010 models on the market yet, and if he buys new he can get what options he wants while saving over $6k off MSRP using the employee pricing.

Just so you know, 2006's will be flooded in the market really soon for end of leases, this means you will have to wade through plenty of cars.

This happens in Canada somewhere around Dec or Jan AFAIK.
