Give me your opinions on Mandrake 8.2

So what do you folks who have used Mandrake prior to 8.2 think about this new version ? I first used Mandrake since around 7.2 and it was the first distro I tried when I first started Linux and I liked it. Mandrake 8 and 8.1 both left a sour taste in my mouth for some reason but 8.2 has me thinking of at least keeping it on my drive along side SuSe even though I don't need to but I really like it. The install process was a breeze as always and their Mandrake Control Panel seems to be much improved but IMHO still not as good as Yast2 but thats my opinion. I also like the way they setup Gnome's Control Panel and the layout of the menu in KDE as well. Another thing I liked about it that shows how well Mandrake is listening to it's users finally is that Evolution is now the default email client that loads up every time you click on a email link. Sure it's not a big deal since I could manually do the same thing very easily but it just shows that they care about the little things to help out the user somewhat. I also like that they fixed supermount and it works great now in this version.

About the only problem I have had so far was with Nvidia drivers which of course we can only blame Nvidia for since they are the ones who handle the drivers for Linux now that they made them close source. I solved that problem easily by editing my modules.conf file in the /etc directory and editing the line that read ==> alias /dev/nvidia/* NVdriver <== and changing it to ==> alias /dev/nvidia* NVdriver <==. So basically I removed the / in front of nvidia. Other then that it's been smooth sailing and am thinking of purchasing at least the standard version just to help them out and support their work as well since it's coming along very nicely. Now I am waiting to see what SuSe has to offer when 8.0 comes out around April 22nd since I have already pre-order it.

P.S. Rumor is that KDE 3.0 final will be out in about 2-3 weeks from now.

i actually really like mandrake 8.2.. easy setup, everything went smooth. although i shanked the system after loading the new nvidia drivers and am installing gentoo as we speak. its good!! ya, the control panel is better than before. i wanted to give kde 3 beta a test drive but i was missing a billion files lol.. but thats another issue... that last run of mandrake helped me learn a lot, especially since im a newb. im thinking about going to debian if gentoo doesnt do it for me... the thing i liked about mandrake 8 was that it had everything you needed. had the latest kde, latest gnome, latest kernel, latest a lot of things. i may even go back to it since it did everything i wanted it to. 🙂

I installed 'drake 8.2, and I have to agree that the built in options are pretty good.
I like all the stuff in the Configuration menu. However, I don't use KDE or Gnome as
a window manager, so I can't really comment on that. 😛

Bastille on there was easy to set up as well. Very informative on how it resolved
some security issues w/ the distro.

It was a breeze to set up, but I was doing some serious unchecking of packages.
I had a problem w/ the Nvidia drivers, but found help on the Nvidia Linux forum at
the nvidia site. Now, I'm smoking w/ UT. 🙂

I'm going to probably stay w/ 'drake for a while until the final version of RH 7.3 is released.

Mandrake 8.2 would not detect my Sound Card although Red Hat 7.2 does.

It has some improvments that are nice though.

Still dual booting with Mandrake 8.1 on my main system, laptop is running Red Hat 7.2

I put it on for two days. Good little OS distro. I scrapped it though, as I want to set it up differently and need another HD for more space. Good god, did I fill up 200GB already?? 😱

I'm not patient enough to give it a long evaluation, but my initial impression is that I won't be switching away from SuSE Linux as my primary OS.

First off, I'm testing it under VMware so the experience is a little different than if I did a native installation.

I thought the installation was a bit underwhelming. It's ugly, and while it's smooth and functional, the installation help was not polished enough.

My impression is that Mandrake's Control Center is not as nice as SuSE's yast2.

Like with any PC operating system I've tried, Mandrake 8.2 has rough edges here and there. It didn't have enough wow factor to overcome the inertia of sticking with my current OS. =)
