Give me real-life examples of stupid things religions have done

I want to write a speech about how religion is the root of all evil. I thought it would also help if in the speech I include real-life examples of things that have happened to people as a result of stupid religious rules and such. I seem to remember a story here a couple of months ago about how this kid couldn't have communion or something because he was lactose intolerant. I want stories like that. If you guys could give me links to examples of dumb things religion has caused, even better.

(This thread is not a joke, so mods, don't lock it. And please, I don't want people to come in here and attempt to defend religion: I don't care. I just want some real life events on this subject. I don't want this to turn into a flame-war or become cluttered with comments that do not add to the main goal of this thread. If you don't have something to add to it, please don't reply. I want some good examples for my speech, thank you.)

more like political manipulation and perversion of religion by political (church) leaders at the time for their own purposes and justifications of their rule and expansion of their power base. Im sure the founders of the catholic church (paul/peter) would be appalled by what the church did in the name of christianity during the middle ages' Inquisition and Crusades, aka, (FREE PASS INTO HEAVEN FOR WHOEVER DIES IN THE HOLY WAR TO RECAPUTRE THE HOLY LAND FOR US!), sound familiar anyone? If most people were able to read and the bible had been translated into their languages, i think that the people would have been more slow to follow the church leaders as they were.

I do not know much of islam, but i would think muhammad would also be appalled for suicide bombings in the middle east by suicide bombers.

Religious extremist are extremely bad, whether they are the old school crusaders of the catholic, modern protestant abortion doctor killers (hmm, they commit the same sin that they accuse the doctor of doing, dont they?) or the modern suicide bombers of islam. They seem to forget the rules. Thou shalt not kill.
